Horton (Martin) elhzm@comcast.net (cover letter):  from:  301 W. 91st Street New York City, NY To:  The Commissioner of Pensions Dear Sir- Page 163 of the census of Pensioners for Revolutionary & Military Services, printed 1841, states that JAMES MARTIN of Jessamine County, KY drew a pension June 1st, 1840 age 82, for service during the Revolution.  He was  an ancestor of mine (?illegible) through him.  I will (?) to get into the Daughters of the American Revolution. I would like to know what rank he (?illeg.) and what regiments he served in.  And also if the COLONEL JAMES MARTIN spoken of in the Field Book of the Revolution, by Lollong (?), Vol. II, page 650, afterwards became a resident of Jessamine Co? I was referred to you by the Military Secretary of the War Department.  And if you can give me any informatiion on the subject, it will greatly oblige me. MARTIN who may have served in the War of 1812, also, the Revolutionary War records of PHILLIP and WILLIAM CORLEW. There is no claim for pension on file based upon service in the Revolutionary War of the JAMES MARTIN first named (born 1749, died 1799 in Kentucky, widow SARAH), nor of a TYRE MARTIN in the Revolutionary War or War of 1812 (or in 1831), nor of a PHILLIP or WILLIAM CORLEW in the Revolutionary War, nor of a LINCOLN MARTIN in the War of 1812 (or in 1811).  No record could be identified as that of JAMES MARTIN, son of the TYRE MARTIN who died in 1849 in Missouri.n Reference to your files will show that you were advised November 13, 1936, that there is no claim for pension on file based upon service of the JAMES MARTIN who married ANN CORLEW and who you describe much more fully. JAMES MARTIN was born in August 1758, and lived with his Father in Albermarle County, Virginia, at the time of the Revolutionary War; the names of his parents are not shown. JAMES MARTIN enlisted in 1779 and served as private in CAPTAIN PEYTON's Virginia Company, stationed at Williamsburg and at Norfolk; he enlisted the next June, served as private in CAPT. T. BUELL's company, COL.ABRAHAM BUFORD's Virginnia regiment until the batle of Guilford, was at the seige of Camden, after which he served in CAPT. FRANK COWHERD's company, COL. SNEED's regiment and served until the fall of 1783. The soldier moved from his Father's home in 1784 and resided in the State of Kentucky. JAMES MARTIN was in HARMAR's, WILKINSON's, ST. CLAIR's, and WAYNE's Indian campaigns, and received two flesh wounds; no details regarding these wounds were given. He was allowed pension on his application executed March 14, 1833, at which time he resided in Jessamine County, Kentucky.  The county line between Fayette and Jessamine Counties passed through his farm at that time. JAMES MARTIN S. 31236 "Dear Sir: Reference is made to you letter in which you request the Revolutiionary War records of JAMES MARTIN, who enlisted from Augusta or Albermarle County, Virginnia, and later lived in Woodford County, Kentucky, of HUGH MARTIN, assistant surgeion, who enlisted from said counties in Virginia and was an early resident of Lexington, Kentucky, and of AUSTIN MARTIN who served from Virginia, also. There is no claim for pension on file based upon service in the Revolutionary War of a HUGH MARTIN of Virginia or Kentucky, nor of any AUSTIN MARTIN.  The reord of JAMES MARTIN is given herein as found in the psension claim, S. 32136, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War, as it may aid you in your research. JAMES MARTIN was born in August 1758 and lived with his Father in ALbermarle County, Virginia at the time of the Revolutionary War; the name of his Father was not stated. JAMES MARTIN enlisted in 1779 and served as a private in CAPT.PEYTON's Virginia Company, stationed at Williamsburg and Norfolk, he enlisted the next June, served as a private in CAPT. T. JAMES WOODS.  Service also in some other Regiments, dates of service from 1778 to 1781.  Did he ever live in Illinois? JAMES MARTIN, not certain about the Regiment in which he served nor the dates.  He was from Augusta County, Virginia (might possibly be Albermarle County).  He lived after 1790 until 1837 in Woodford County, Kentucky. Refer to MBAB-g 801 File: Dear Sir: May I ask for the following informaion relative to the following persons pension or land grant record for Revolutionary War service: JAMES MARTIN, (handwritten note apparently by Claims Service Rep.: "R"- could this be a middle initial??) enlisted from Augusta, or Albermarle County, VA, and later lived in Woodford County, KY.  Died there in 1837.  Wife was named MARTHA. HUGH MARTIN, asst.surgeon, probably enlisted from same counties as above and tradition says was a very early resident pf Lexington, KY.  May have migrated to either Illinois, Jefferson County, or to Missouri.  Name of wife unknown. Would like to join the D.A.R. sometime and would need the necessary information to do so. JAMES MARTIN was a Revolutionary War soldier for seven years. Born in Albermarle County, Virginia. Son of THOMAS MARTIN, who came to America when England subdued Ireland. JAMES MARTIN was in several battles.  one Eutaw Springs. Member of  WASHINGTON's Company.  Was married twice- first a MISS YOUNG; second marrisge to MISS MILLER.  Think MISS YOUNG's name was JUDITH.  Perhaps LETITIA.  She was from Jessamine County, Kentucky near Lexington.
