Rudd 1852-1853 The University of Virginia Albemarle County VA - Pre-Civil War Autograph Book, The University of Virginia, J. W. Rudd Transcribed from the online images and submitted for use by the USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Childress You can view the actual images of the autograph book pages at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/albemarle/photos/schools/uva/ James Gillam Rudd was the son of Daniel Rudd and Elizabeth Gillam Davenport. He was born in Newberry County, South Carolina on Feb 18, 1836 and died Sept 26, 1855. While attending the University of Virginia in 1852-53 he kept an autograph book that many friends signed. The book must have been sent back to the university after he returned to Newberry, SC after becoming ill because some of the entries are dated in 1854 and 1855. When reading some of these it is obvious that his friends knew of his failing health. He died of tuberculosis. Several also mention Westland(?) House, which was apparantly a dormitory. His younger brother, Jonothan Davenport Rudd later moved to Marshall, Harrison County, Texas where he was a large stock breeder. Jonothan fought in the Civil War and later served in the Texas Legislature. The book is in the possession of Jan Craven, Lake Charles, Louisiana. --- J W Rudd --- rudd10.jpg Your true and affectionate friend Uni' Va James H Power June 9th 1856 of Fort Dunham Cherow, Chesterfield District South Carolina --- rudd11.jpg Your friend W.C.
