Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 14 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60 and #18. Alleghany County Owners: Jackson Hepler heirs, Present owners (1937). Description: This is a family cemetery. There are not many graves, and only a few are marked. The graves on the outside of the fence are said to be members of the Maggart family, early owners of the place. There are no markers. Historical Significance: John M. Arritt, the last Arritt who owned the place, was a Confederate soldier, a member of Company G, Twenty-second Virginia Regiment. Michael Arritt, was also a member of Company G, Twenty-second Virginia Regiment. Several of the Arritt’s served in the War Between the States. The following markers and inscriptions are to be seen in the Arritt Cemetery: J. M. Arritt Born Aug. 25, 1840 Died May 28, 1915 At Rest Mattie V. Arritt Born July 13, ____ Died June 16, ____ M.E. Arritt Died Oct. 13, 1887 47 years old At Rest Two graves unmarked and on the outside of the fence, are said to be members of the Maggart family.
