ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Callaghan-Dickson Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Callaghan-Dickson cemetery: 1937 Aug. 17 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: 8 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia, on Route #60. Take private road one-quarter to one-half mile north of Stonewall Station. Alleghany County OWNERS: Present Owner: Charles Callaghan (1937) DESCRIPTION: This private cemetery is situated on the north side of a hill or ridge, between Dunlop Creek on the southeast and Oglies Creek on the northwest, being on the side next to Oglies Creek. The cemetery is enclosed by a board fence, but is not well kept, being partly covered with brush and vines. A mighty oak tree in the center of the enclosure overshadows the graves. Mr. B.A. Persinger is authority for the statement that there are quite a few graves of old settlers and inhabitants outside of the enclosure. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The “Great Road” known as the James River and Kanawha Turnpike, passed near the cemetery; and the Callaghan tavern was about .5 mile distant to the northwest up Oglies Creek; the Dickson tavern two or three miles further, up the same creek. Dickson Apr. 21, 1852 Apr. 14, 1854 A little bud of love to blossom with God above Maricomne Dickson Jan. 23, 1856 Oct. 2, 1881 Agnes V. Byers July 9, 1850 Jan. 30, 1864 All of the above graves are set off in one square. Julia E. Wise (a Dickson before her marriage) wife of David J. Wise Mar. 13, 1830 Oct. 25, 1909 As for me I will behold thy face in righteousness I will be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness Charley W. Wise son of D.J. and E. Wise July 7, 1856 Killed Nov. 7, 1882 at Low Moor, Va. while in the discharge of his duty as Conductor on Chesapeak and Ohio Rail Road. In Loving Memory of David M. Guy Born in Kent, England Jan. 7, 1833 Died at Callaghans July 21, 1877 Eliza James from England, met her death in the fire at Callaghans house Dec. 29, 1873. Age 13 years. (This white girl was brought from England with Lady Melton as her personal maid.)
