ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Cedar Hill Cemetery ----€€€---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Cedar Hill cemetery: 1937 May 10 Research made by Mary S. Venable Cemetery Location: 1.25 miles southeast of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60 and #18 Alleghany County DESCRIPTION: The cedars planted by one of the trustees, and who also marked out the walks with his transit, are falling and none have been replaced. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: No great celebrity lies buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, but many others are buried there by whose efforts Alleghany County has benefited. Many soldiers of the Confederate States Army who are buried in this cemetery, have graves marked by their loving descendants. Few men who served in the War of 1812 are buried in family cemeteries, and none from the Mexican War. From time to time the cemetery has been enlarged, and the space in the white section will be ample for some time to come. The Negro cemetery adjoins and at present it is in need of space. What I do, thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter Erected to the memory of George Harrison Payne, M.D. By his bereaved wife, who best know and most laments his death. The deep and general demonstration of sorrow at this death testifies to the value of his life.
