ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Damron Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Damron cemetery: 1937 Dec. 17 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: 20 miles west of Covington, Virginia, go on Route #60 west 18 miles to Crow’s Lake; Route #311 go west 2 miles on right (N) of highway on a slight knoll on west bank of Dunlap’s Creek, just beyond a new steel highway bridge. Alleghany County OWNERS: Abstract land title from original to present owner (1937): Prior to 1828, see Fincastle Courthouse, Botetourt County. 1828 John Damron willed to sons, Joseph, John, William, Christopher and Andrew the plantation on which I now reside on Dunlaps Creek adjoining Jas. Brown and Jno. Noel and my lands (Iron Hill tract) on Snake Run adjoining Jno. Stone. Will Book 1, page 138 1889, partition of real estate of William Damron, deceased, Plat A. Lot No. 1 of 46 acres. Assigned to Jesse M. Damron adjoining William and Mosby lands. Deed Book 12, page 1864 1905, Jessie M. Damron, C.A. Damron and wife, Mary, sell and conveys 46 acres on Dunlaps Creek to Sallie Florence Damron. Deed Book 30, page 483. DESCRIPTION: This is a public and private burying ground with no fence enclosing the graveyard at large. It is fairly well kept, no brush but timber surrounding. Many old graves are practically invisible. INSCRIPTIONS: Damron Square enclosed by a high wire fence. William Damron July 23, 1804 – Apr. 1, 1883 and Benjamina E. Damron (his 2nd wife) June 25, 1825 – Nov. 21, 1899 Sarah wife of James A. McGraw June 15, 1849 Apr. 28, 1922 In the same square without tombstones are buried, the first wife of the above. William Damron, Mary Allen before marriage. d. approximately 1850 The parents of said William John Damron and wife, Mary (Hardy before mar.) These are the first graves in the square. Louisa Damron, wife of J.W. Graham, born 1843-died 1914 George N. Damron d. May 20, 1934 – 73 yrs, 10 mo. Sallie F., his wife – died Nov. 11, 1935 – 76 years Jos. A. McGraw buried on north side of wife, Sarah d. Dec. 1935, approx. age 90 (note: Mr. and Mrs. McGraw were not kin to the Damrons but close friends.) The graveyard at large, with tombstones: Delila A. wife of C.W. Shoemaker Oct. 16, 1849 – Nov. 18, 1911 Rev. L.R. DeWese Feb. 15, 1858 – Sept. 1, 1927 Frances wife of A.L. Bess d. Feb. 10, 1802 – age 60 years Without tombstones: Charles W. Shoemaker d. May 2, 1932 age 87 years, 16 da. A Confederate veteran buried on north side of wife, Delila. Wellington Sawyer d. 1909 – Approx. age 80 years According to Mr. John Damron living on Damron land nearby and a direct descendant of the Damron’s the above cited John Damron and wife, Mary (Hardy) were about the first people buried in this cemetery. This John. Damron, the first came to Covington during last quarter of the 18th century (1775-1800) and married Mary Hardy. Their children were: John who immigrated to Tennessee and then North Caroline, and died there. Joseph, the first surveyor of Alleghany County died 1862. William born 1804 – d. 1883 the above mentioned. He lived nearby some one-half mile up the road to the west. He was a prosperous farmer and large land owner. Christopher, born 1806 – died 1892, was a lawyer in Covington, Virginia. Andrew, born 1807 – died 1886 was one of the first Judges in Alleghany County. John Damron (the first in Alleghany County) came from Amherst County, Virginia, being the son of Dunsmore Damron. The above John Damron was an early settler, only first permanent settler in Alleghany County, then Botetourt County. He owned about 1m000 acres of land on Dunlap’s Creek and Snake Run.
