ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Dew Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Dew cemetery: 1937 June 8 Research made by L. Blanche Bess combined with: Survey Report, Dew cemetery 1937 Apr. 20 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: Go 18 miles southwest of Covington, Routes #60 and #18, on Absolom Dew’s lands. Alleghany County Description: This is a private burying ground and was established in the early days when the Dew family settled in what is now Alleghany County. The location is good. It is on a rise above Potts Creek, in a very peaceful place. When this land has been transferred from time to time, the graveyard has been held in trust. It has been woefully neglected for years. The fence has long since fallen away and only the rocks where the corners rested, remain. The graves are out in the open field. There are a number of stones that bear no inscription and there are sunken places where there are no stones, but we feel sure that they were graves. Historical Significance: The Dews were large land owners and came here in the early days from their plantation called “Dewsville” in King and Queen County. There are a few stones, bearing inscriptions. Some are dim, while others are quite legible. This was a fine piece of hand-work. Some of the inscriptions are beautifully done in a fine Spencerian hand-writing, as fine as if done with a quill pen. It hardly seems possible that such lovely work could have been done on mountain stones and to have remained legible for such a long period of time. Following Inscriptions: Unfenced – A row of five graves, all Dews with hard black slate markers – two have inscriptions) William Dew Born 1827 Died Aug 27 on the side of this stone if April 12, 1846 Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord Age 68 yrs. (This writing was cut by William’s son, Absolom and “April 12, 1846” is probably the date of the death of William’s wife Mary.) Joe Terry was buried here about 1885 Samuel Dew Aged 23 yrs, 11 days Died June A.D. 1841 (or 1844) (This is another son of William) It is thought that Absolom and Charles are the other two buried in the same row – Authority Mrs. H.D. Robinson, Mr. Lee Scott. Fenced in (wire fence) 7 visible graves. With stone: Sarah wife of A.P. Jamison b. 1870 A slate headstone with writing: Victoria A. Wolfe age 24 years 9 mo. 10 da. departed from this life Oct. 30 (This woman was a daughter of Absolom Dew and married Liberty Wolfe says Mrs. H.P. Robinson. She died approx. 1880) Other known graves within: John Tunnil Died 1790 (no marker) Liberty Wolfe and Daniel Wolfe (both died of diphtheria, only few years difference in their births and few days in death.) d. about 1888 age approx. 50 years Daniel Wolfe married Taylor Dew, a sister to Victoria and is also buried within the fence.
