ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Emory Chapel Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Emory Chapel cemetery: 1937 Dec. 8 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: 14 miles north of Covington, Virginia. From Covington, go 2.5 miles north on Route #220 to intersection with Route #268; thence turn north on Route #268 and go 11.5 miles up Jackson River to Natural Wells. The cemetery is located on high bank on the north side of the highway. Alleghany County OWNERS: Trustees of the Methodist Church known as Emory Chapel, and their successors. Fleming Keyser and wife Nancy, grant and convey to the Trustees of the Methodist Church: William H. Keyser, Benjamin T. Walton, James B. Clark, Frederick Butler, and James L. Lockhart, and their successors, one acre of land on Jackson River, (Natural Well) with church thereon known as Emory Chapel on the north bank of the road. (Deed Book 5, p. 346) DESCRIPTION: A public burial ground enclosed by a fence, it is situated on the west side of the church. It contains about 75 graves and is kept in fair condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This is the only public burial ground at Natural Wells, no other being nearer than 8 or 9 miles. The Keyser’s and Andrews’ living nearby were buried here. The Natural Well is nearby and to the west of the cemetery. Inscriptions to the found in the Emory Chapel Cemetery: William H.
