ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Givens Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Givens cemetery: 1937 Feb. 3 Research made by L. Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 22 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60 and #18 Alleghany County Owners: Potts Valley Mining and Manufacturing Company, Charleston, West Virginia, Present owner (1937). Description: There has been some work done on the Givens Cemetery, putting it in a much better condition than it formerly was, yet there remains much more to be done to make it as it ought to be. We were greatly surprised to find so few stones there. There is a marker for David G. Givens, and one for a grandson, but no others for the Givens family; not even for David G. Givens’ wife. This seems very strange, but people do not always willfully neglect these duties. The things of daily life come so thick and so fast, that other duties even more sacred perhaps, are often crowded out and they are neglected or forgotten, sometimes completely forgotten. There are several soldiers buried there, the Givens boys we have been told were brought home and buried there. Their graves are not marked. On a hill just above the Givens’ Tavern, this cemetery is well located, and with a little work it could be made a beautiful place. A private burial ground, the plot has been reserved “forever” but no trustees have been appointed. The owner’s have held this plot as a sacred trust. Historical Significance: While David G. Givens did not serve in the War Between the States as a soldier himself, he gave several sons to the cause. Adam Givens who was made a Captain, belonged to the Sixtieth Virginia Infantry; Lewis Givens was wounded at the battle of Cloyd’s farm in Southwest Virginia, and died there. Sam Givens, also a soldier. If the bodies of these three soldiers were brought home for burial, and we think they were, the fact is indicated by three unmarked graves in the David G. Givens row. Mrs. David G. Givens’ grave has no marker. It may be mentioned here that Dr. Beverly Tucker, a man who was loved and sadly missed, lies in this cemetery without a marker. The following four inscriptions are to be found in the Givens Cemetery: David G.
