ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Humphries Graves ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Humphries lone graves: 1937 July 15 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: Go 11 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia, leaving Route #60, go Route #18 to Hayes Gap 5 miles, take Route #619 up Hayes Gap to Richpatch 3 miles, turn west on Route #616, go 2 or 3 miles to west, at junction take Route #618, go 1 mile to south of V.B. Humphries farm on southeast of road. Alleghany County DESCRIPTION: A private burial ground of William Humphries and his family , situated on the west side of a hill some 200 yards in a hollow above C.B. Humphries saw mill site. The exact location of the graves are difficult to locate, they have grown up in grass and locust trees, but Mr. O.B. Humphries, a distant relative who owns the land, states that they are on the south side of an old road, some 200 yards up the hill from his saw mill site. The Humphries were the first settlers in the Richpatch (as far back as I have yet ascertained). John Humphries, the grandfather of William Humphries, who is said to be buried here, by O. B. Humphries the land owner, who is a great- grandson of said William Humphries, was in the Richpatch in 1766. The said William Humphries lived in the west end of the Humphries settlement. Jesse Humphries, his brother, lived in the east end of settlement. Ruth Persinger, a daughter of Henry Persinger and Greselda, married William Humphries. Henry Persinger died 1824 William Humphries reared a large family and was named after his father. Mr. R.R. Humphries, a merchant of Covington, Virginia has the family tree. Some of the children of William Humphries and Ruth, his wife, are buried in the Jamison Simmons graveyard in Richpatch. William Humphries, Sr. d. 1827 in Richpatch, 79 years old. Mr. L.L. Humphries is the authority for saying he is buried in Jamison-Simmons graveyard. There are no tombstones or inscriptions in this cemetery. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Mr. O.B.
