Stover Cemetery Location: 8 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia. Take Route #60 to intersection with Route #18. The cemetery is on the right going south. Alleghany County OWNERS: Ezekiel Johnson William Johnson (son of Ezekiel) Bernard Johnson (son of William) Henry & Julia Ann Johnson (son of Bernard) H.J. Hellmintoller J.B. Helms DESCRIPTION: This is a public burying ground, enclosed by a fence of part wood and part wire, with an iron gate. There are some lilies planted and the condition of the cemetery is fairly good. Many of the graves are not marked and some have unlettered, crude markers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Johnson family seems to have been an industrious family; they were millers and blacksmiths. This cemetery was on the old Johnson place, and is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in this part of the county. It is debatable whether the Johnson or the Bowyer cemetery is the oldest. The following names and inscriptions may be seen in this cemetery: Philip Johnson b. Feb. 1, 1834 d. Aug. 25, 1880 Thou art gone but not forgotten Catherine E. Johnson b. May 29th, 1837 d. July 16, 1912 The local informants said that there were several of the Johnson family whose graves were without stones. They mentioned William Johnson, and his son, Bernard, who ran the mill and was the blacksmith, and his son. William Helmintoller b. Mch 12, 1829 d. Aug. 18, 1909 Bethiar R. Helmintoller wife of Wm. b. Apr. 7, 1828 d. Mch. 7, 1900 Robert Madison Hellmintoller b. Aug. 30, 1859 d. Oct. 25, 1931 Nellie wife of J.O. Fridley b. Nov. 29, 1852 d. Mch. 5, 1890 R.L. Terry 1862 – 1925 Elizabeth A. wife of James Craft b. July 26th, 1851 d. June 15th, 1894 At Rest Mary Jane McDavitt b. Jan. 5, 1843 d. Apr. 22, 1901 (Over this grave is a monument about 5 feet high, and it and the grave, enclosed by an iron fence about 3 feet high) Some 400 or 500 hundred yards away Elias Hepler, an officer in the War Between the States, was shot from ambush from a bluff on the other side of the Creek.
