ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Kyle Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Kyle cemetery: 1937 Feb. 3 Research made by L. Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 23 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia, on Routes #60, #18 and #607. Alleghany County OWNERS: Unknown DESCRIPTION: The few names recorded are from the Kyle Cemetery. There are only a few stones, but thee are a number of unmarked graves in this cemetery. The place had been neglected for years until the timber had grown up to be large trees, some had fallen and broken some of the stones. Quite recently a grandson of Mr. Galbraith Kyle became interested in the old family burying ground and visited the place, finding it a desolate wilderness. This grandson, Galbraith Kyle, employed a man to clean up and to fence the cemetery. This work has been completed and has made a wonderful improvement. The Kyles are very prominent people and used to own and live on the place where the cemetery is located. The location is very good, and is a quiet place where the only sounds are the singing of the birds and the murmer of Potts Creek. We have not been able to find any record of trustees, but the plot has been reserved when property was sold from time to time. The owner holds sacred the trust and the plot has never been used for any other purpose or in any way molested. There are heroes buried here. James Kyle who was killed at Phrasher’s Farm on June 30, 1862, was raised on the farm where he was buried. Moses Kyle who died in a hospital July 8, 1863, was also raised there. Robert Kyle, color bearer in his company, was killed at the battle of ____. When he fell the flag was picked up by William Rayhill, Company C, 22nd Virginia Infantry, and carried on. If Robert Kyle’s body was brought home for burial, there is no marker to indicate his grave. Galbraith Kyle, the father of these splendid young men who gave their lives in defense of their country, was Captain of the Home Guards. Their mother was Julia White, and said to be a woman of fine character. The little girls, Caroline and Sophia, who died so near to each other had Diphtheria. There was at that time a terrible epidemic of this dreaded disease which took the lives of many people. We have been told that some whole families were taken, and often several were buried together. John Hamilton who came from Belfast, Ireland, about 1832, was buried in this cemetery. Also his son, Samuel, who was a Confederate soldier, was murdered soon after the War Between the States, and buried here. They have no markers. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: C. H. Reynolds J.
