Hepler, Russell Hepler, Charles Wolfe, I, William Tingler. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The name “Lone Star” was given the church by Mr. N.G. Reynes, Covington, Virginia. An interesting story has been handed down from Father Pinnell to son, and from mother to daughter for generations, of the origin of Lone Star Cemetery. While this story is true, yet no living person can by pointed to who knows more about its origin than is told here. Mr. mother (mother of the worker) has told me the story many times. The story follows: A young girl, whose name was Smith, and who made her home with the Mathew Rayhill family, late one evening went to bring the cows in from the forest range. Her little sister wanted to go with her and she and her sister set out happily together. After reaching the forest they were captured by Indians. The older girl was very brave and to save her little sister’s life agreed to go with the Indians if they would set her little sister free. This they did, and then took the young white girl to their camp. She later married an Indian and lived with the Indians for years, raising several children. Years after when she was set free, she came back to the Rayhill family, who lived then where Mr. Charles Wolfe now lives near the Long Star Cemetery. She had been with the Indians so long that she learned their way of living and never showed much interest in her former friends or their ways. She talked much about her Indian husband, whom she called “Mahickan John”. She never seemed happy after she came home, leaving her Indian family. On Sundays she would sit under a big oak tree and make Indian baskets. When she died at a very old age she was buried under the oak tree where she had spent many hours weaving baskets and day-dreaming of the past. This was the beginning of what is now known as Lone Star Cemetery. The oak tree has been cut down, but the stump remains. The land was owned by the Rayhills. “Mother Smith” captured by Indians returned to Rayhills First person buried here Achilles Dew Born Jan. 28, 1802 Died Sep. 30, 1870 Catherine wife of Achilles Dew born Nov. 26, 1794 died Nov. 8, 1802 At Rest Rev.
