ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Potts Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Potts cemetery: 1937 May 11 Research made by L. Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 12 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Route #60 Alleghany County Owners: C.D. Plymal, Present Owner. The land on which Potts’ grave is located, is a part of the same tract taken up by David Bowyer, coming down through the family until Jackson Bowyer, the last owner of the Bowyer family, died. The land is now owned by Clarence D. Plymal. Description: The grave, traditionally known as Potts grave, lies on a rocky hill above Edgar’s Run. The grave is very well defined and is marked by mountain stones at the head and foot. The stones are small but seem very firm as if they had been well wet up long ago, and are in direct line with the rising and setting of the sun. This was a custom observed among the pioneers, the head stone always facing the East. This custom is very noticeable in old cemeteries. There are no inscriptions on these stones. The grave known as Potts grave is not the only grave there. There is one other in line with it, while there are several outlines that appear with small stones. Historical Significance: The grave of the man for whom the Creek was named, is located on the banks of Edgar’s Run, a small stream that comes from the mountain side and empties into Potts Creek. If this was a cemetery when Potts was buried there it must be very old. It has the appearance of an old neglected cemetery. The place is very rough and rocky, and evidently has never been cultivated as the graves have not been disturbed. We have been unable to learn what cemetery it was, and after making thorough research, we have come to the conclusion that there is no one living who knows whether any one was buried there before Potts. Probably his grave would have long since been forgotten had it not been that the Creek bore his name. Potts name has a place in history, but we have been unable to learn the date of his death. That he was one, if not the first of the early settlers here, is a certainty. Sources of Information: Informants: Mrs. Jackson Hepler, Blue Spring Run, Virginia Mrs. C.F.
