Cemetery Location:  23 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60, #18 
                    and #607.
                    Alleghany County

Description:

The Reid-Gillespie Cemetery is right beside the Kyle Cemetery.  It is fenced but 
needs to be thoroughly cleaned and made beautiful which can be done with very 
little expense, as it is not a large plot of ground.  There are only a few 
graves marked.

Here too, lie men who served in the War Between the States, and shared the 
hardships of that time.  They deserve something better – better kept, as their 
last resting place, and we hope that since the good work has been started at the 
Kyle cemetery so near, that it will cause those who have loved ones there to 
soon be cleaning up and planting flowers.

The cemeteries out along the murmuring streams of water seem very quiet and 
peaceful; it brings a feeling of being very near to God when we visit these 
sanctuaries of the dead.  This is a private burial ground and like many others, 
no record of trustees can be found.

When the owners of these farms on which the family burial plot was located sold 
to another, they made a reservation in the deed reserving a specified plot of 
land “Forever” as shown on court records of old deeds.  The plot is held sacred 
by each purchaser, and we have never known of a violation of this rule.

It did our hearts good to see the little flags waving over these graves, showing 
that some one who loved them had been there and had left this token of 
affection.

George W. Reid was a Confederate soldier.  James P. Gillispie too, was a 
Confederate soldier, and served during the last part of the war.
