Crockett Smith graves: 1937 June 22 Research made by L. Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 12 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60, #18, #615, on the farm of Emory Bush. Alleghany County Owners: 1799-1822, Wm Crawford, of Botetourt County, sells, grants and conveys to Thomas Crawford, Alleghany County for $200.00, two tracts of land on Blue Spring Run, a branch of Potts Creek, which is a tributary of Jackson River, one tract of 135 acres near the Saw Pit and adjoining land of Christopher Persinger, being a part 450 acres survey patented by Jacob Persinger, Jr., 1799. The other tract of 52 acres, joining the 135 acre tract on north, being a part of 97 acres, patented by Christopher Persinger, 1792; both tracts conveyed with all appurtenances. D. Bk #1, page 29. The graves are on the 135 acre tract. 1835-1845: 1842 Sampson Persinger and wife, Rebecca of Alleghany County, sells, grants and conveys to Jno. C. Smith of Botetourt County three different tracts of land, all in one piece, totaling 241 acres; 135 acres; 52 acres and 54 acres on Blue Spring Run. D.B. #4, page 280. 1845 – J.C. Smith, sells, grants and conveys to Anthony Harless of Giles County for $150.00 a certain tract of land, containing 285 acres on Blue Spring Run, with all appurtenances. D.B. #4, page 427. 1845 – Anthony Harless appointed J.C. Smith, agent to have possession, cultivate and use both my real and personal property; 4 tracts of land on Blue Spring Run, 135 acres and 52 acres were conveyed by Thomas Crawford and wife, Polly to Sampson Persinger in 1835, another tract of 54 acres were conveyed by Persinger to said Smith, another tract of 46 acres, conveyed from Geo. Byer to said Smith. D.B. #4, page 429. 1853 – Anthony Harless and wife, Rosannah, grant and convey to J.C. Smith four different tracts, containing 287 acres on Blue Spring Run in one boundary. D.B. #5, page 322. 1909 – James King and wife, E.J. and others, heirs of J.C. Smith, grants and conveys to Harriet M. Bush certain tract of 249 acres (a part of 287 acres above) on Blue Spring Run, adjoining the lands of J.A. Arritt, W.W. and R.B. Rose, and M.D. Gilbert. D.B. #44, page 300. 1918 – Harriet M. Bush and husband, Jacob L., grants and conveys to Emory C. Bush 150 acres on Blue Spring Run, adjoining the lands of Rufus Brown, J.L. Fridley, heirs, Anderson Arritt and Jordan Tract, being a part of tract conveys to Mrs. Harriet M. Bush by heirs of Jno. C. Smith. D. Bk. Description: The two private graves are situated near west side of Blue Spring Run Road, Route $615, approximately 160 feet southwest of house site of Jno. C. Smith. The stump of a large poplar tree is now implanted in the middle or between the two graves. No fence around the graves, which are thrown out to cattle pasture. Historical Significance: John Crockett Smith m. Susannah B. Harless, a daughter of Anthony Harless of Giles County, who owned and farmed one of the best farms in Giles County. John C. Smith migrated to Alleghany County from Giles County, Virginia, states Mr. Jno. Bowen. Children of John C. Smith and wife born before 1860; Anthony Harless Smith d. July 31, 1844 Giles M. Smith born Sept. 4, 1845, d. November 1, 1887 (buried in Humphries graveyard in Richpatch) Harriet M. Smith b. April 4, 1850, d. June 28, 1934 Martha Elizabeth Smith b. January 26, 1858, d. Aug. 6, 1862 The Grist mill of John C. Smith stood across the road from the graves. Only the two graves, with no tombstones, or inscriptions: Jno. Crockett Smith d. 1778 Susannah B.
