ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Washington Vass Grave ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Lone grave of Washington Vass: 1937 Sept. 22 Research made by Robert Stover Cemetery Location: 9 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia, leaving Route #60, go to Route #18 up Potts Creek 7 miles to Blue Spring Run Junction, go south on Route #615 up the Blue Spring Run 2 miles to farm of B.H. Bush on east of said Blue Spring Run. Alleghany County OWNERS: (1937) Present Owner, B.H. Bush DESCRIPTION: A lone grave situated on a hill above Powder Mill Hollow. Only crude stones for grave markers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The grave is approximately 200 yards northeast of Powder Mill site, being owned and operated by Jacob Persinger and land owned also by Christopher Persinger. Blue Spring Run is called Persinger Run in old deeds. The grist mill and home of John C. Smith stood across the creek about one-fourth mile to the southeast. The grave site was on land of Smith. B.H. Bush is a brother to Emory Bush, whose land adjoins the B.H. Bush farm on the north. Washington Vass was a bachelor, a stone mason, a farm hand and great hunter. He was a Confederate soldier. Mr. Porter Bowen states that his grandfather, William Bowen, related that Washington Vass was a wagoner (teamster) in the Confederate Army. William Bowen was also a Confederate soldier.
