ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Walker Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Walker cemetery: 1937 Feb. 3 Research made by L. Blanche Bess Cemetery Location: 23 miles southwest of Covington, Virginia on Routes #60, #18 and #607. Alleghany County Owners: A.C. Sizer, present owner (1937) The Shawvers, who owned the place long ago, no doubt served in some of the early wars, but there are no markers to the many graves. We know that John Shawver owned the place as early as 1807. Description: The Walker cemetery like many other family burying grounds, has been neglected for years. It has been fenced but the fence has fallen away in places, and altogether it has a lonely and forgotten appearance. Historical Significance: I brings sadness to the heart to visit these neglected places, knowing that the people who have been laid to rest there were among those early settlers who came into this section when it was a wilderness; labored and established homes; built up a neighborhood and a county; and who added much to the development of our country as a whole. Some who lie there gave their lives in war in defense of their homes and their country, and now, it seems, they have been forgotten. We have recently been informed that a great-grand-son of Mr. Shawver, once owner of the place, is making plans to have the cemetery fenced and put in good condition. Mr. W.B. Rayhill of Paint Bank, is the man who is planning this work. The following three inscriptions were found in the Walker Cemetery: Wade Walker Born July 21, 1838 Died Jan. 6, 1878 Beloved Father, Farewell E. Annie C. Daughter of W.H. and V.C. Walker Born Mar. 19, 1871 Died Nov. 30, 1880 H.A. Rayhill Born May 21, 1871 Died Fe. 17, 1920 Henry Walker, who was Captain of the militia before the War Between the States, and who was the father of John and Wade Walker; was buried there; also his wife and her parents, and it is believed her grandfather and grandmother. All Shawvers were buried there. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
