Amelia County, Virginia, Biography: Henry Marsh Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Doyle B. Marsh ==================================================================== Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ==================================================================== Henry Marsh was born to parents unknown in Amelia County, Virginia in 1761 according to the affidavit he gave on October 09, 1832 in Sparta (White County) Tennessee in order to receive a pension for fighting in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Line. He died in the 11th Civil District of White County, Tennessee on the Calfkiller River on September 25, 1859. His surnames were MASH and MARSH. Henry fought with the Virginia Militia at the Battle of Camden in South Carolina on August 16, 1780. It is thought by researchers that he married Agness Bundy in Washington County, Virginia on June 07, 1785. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Simon Cockrell of that county. Records say the marriage was between Henry NASH and Agness Bundy. Since there was no one by the name of Henry Nash in that county in 1785, it is thought the transcriber mistook an "M" for an "N". Also, Nash and Mash were used interchangeably at times. Henry Mash paid Personal Property Taxes in Washington County. According to his 1832 affidavit, he lived in the following places after the war: McMinn and Bledsoe Counties in Tennessee. Unknown Visited the Missouri Territory. Before 1821 Washington and Russell Counties in Virginia.1783-1806. Wayne County, Kentucky. 1807-1829 White County, Tennessee. 1839-1859 About 1780, he visited his mother (name unknown) in Henry County, Virginia after serving his first of two enlistments in the Virginia Militia. Henry married the second time to Phereby Harvey in Overton County, Tennessee on September 06, 1816. Henry had two sons in his first marriage to Agness Bundy. Both were born in Russell County, Virginia. They were Stephen Mash/Marsh and John A. Mash/Marsh. He and his second wife, Phereby, had a daughter named Nancy Marsh (Kidwell) and a son, Jehoida H. Marsh. Stephen Mash/Marsh married Sarah Young and later Louisa Brown. No children have been found in the first marriage but there were 15 born to Louisa. John A. Marsh married the widow, Catherine Kidwell Butram, and they had two children: Nancy Marsh who remained unmarried and Jehoida H. Marsh who married Angeletta Kidwell, a twin sister of Jeanetta. Nancy Marsh married William Silas Kidwell, the widower, who was the father of twin daughters: Angeletta and Jeanetta. Nancy and William had 8 children. Jehoida and Angeletta had 10 children. Henry probably lived with his son, John A. Marsh and family, near Carpenter Fork of Otter Creek in Wayne County, Kentucky from around 1826 until 1830. John A. and family stayed there until 1835 when they sold their farm and moved to White County, Tennessee where Henry was already living. Henry and his son John A. lived in the 12th Civil District of White County, Tennessee. By 1840, they were living in the 11th Civil Distric in the same county near the Calfkiller River. In 1832, Henry Marsh, at the age of 71, received a pension for fighting in the Revolutionary War. He received a Bounty Land Warrant for 160 acres in 1855 when he was 94 years old. It is thought he sold the warrant rather than claim land in the public domain. After his death, his wife Phereby received his pension in 1860. She lost that pension at the beginning of the Civil War. She was re-instated after the war was over. The date of her death is unknown. Henry may have had a brother named David Mash/Marsh. David was born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1859 and was an Indian scout during the Revolutionary War. He lived with Henry in Russell County, Virginia in 1790 and again in 1830 in White County, Tennessee. David lived in the same areas Henry lived most of the time. David died a ward of the county in Wayne County, Kentucky.
