VA Deed Book 1, Page 37 (or 47 renumbered) Matthew Mayes This Indenture made the Eighteenth Day of April in the Year of our Lord Christ One thousand seven hundred and thirty seven Between Mathew Mayes Junr of the Parish of Rowly and County of Amelia of ye one part and Matthew Mayes Senr of the Parish and County aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the Said Matt Mayes for and in consideration of ye sum of one shilling Curant money to him in hand paid by the said Matt Mayes before the Sealing and delivery hereof the Receipt whereof the said Matt Mayes doth hereby acknowledge hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth Bargain and sell unto ye said Matt. Mayes his Executors, administrators and assigns one tract or parsell of Land Containing by Estimation two hundred acres be this acres more or less lying and being on ye lower sides of little Creek of Flatt Creek in the Parish and County aforesaid and bounded as followeth to witt Beginning at the mouth of a Small branch of ye sd little Creek thence up the water course of the said branch to the fork thence along a line of Meerkl trees to ye old line Thence south along the said old line to Corner Jack and thence Northwest two hundred and twenty eight poles to a Small white oak Saytion upon the little Creek thence down the same to the mouth of the small branch first began at together with all Houses Orchards, Woods and appurtenances to the said land belonging or in anywise appertaining which said two hundred acres of land is part of a Tract of fore hundred acres granted to the said Matt Mayes Junr by Pattent dated the fifteenth day of March One thousand seven hundred and thirty five. To have paid to hold the said Tract or Parcell of two hundred acres of Land and Premises with the appurtinances unto the said Matt. Mayes Senr his Executors Administrators and Assigns from the day next before the date hereof unto ye end and term of One whole Year from thence next insuing to the inteset(?), that by virtue and of the statutes for transfering uses into possesion of the Said Math Mayes Senr may be in the actual possession of the said land and premices and be enabled to take and accept of a grant and release of the revertion and Inheritance of the same land and Premises to him and his heirs to the use of him his heirs and assigns forever. This Indenture made the Ninteenth day of April in the Year of our Lord Christ, One thousand seven hundred and thirtyseven ~ Between Matthew Junr of the Parrish of Rawley and County of Amelia of the one part and Mathew Mayes Senr of the parish & County of the other part Witnesseth that whereas the said Matthew Mayes Junr by Indenture bearing date the day before the date hereof and for the Consideration therein mentioned hath bargained and sold unto the said Matthew Mayes Senr his Executors administrators and assigns one Tract or parcell of Land containing by Estimation two hundred acres be the same more or less lying and being on the lower side of the little Creek of Flatt Creek in the Parish and County afore said and bounded as in the said Indenture is mentioned to be held with the appurtinances by the said Matthew Mayes Senr his Executors administrators and assigns from the day next before the date thereof unto the the end and Form of one whole year from thence next esussing to ye intent that by Virture thereof and of the Statue for transferring uses into Possesion the said Matthew Mays Senr might be in ye actual Possession of the said land and Premises and be enabled to take and accept of a grant and release of the Revertion and Inheritance thereof to him and his heirs to the use of him his heirs and assigns forever as by the said Recited Indenture more at large apeareth. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that ye said Matt Mayes Junr. For and in Consideration of the sum of five shillings Curant money to him in hand paid by the said Matt Mayes Ser. Well and truly paid at and before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the Receit whereof he the said Matt Mayes Junr doth hereby acknowledge Hath given granted Remised Released and Confirmed and by these presents for himself and his Heirs doth give grant Remise Release and confirm unto ye said Matt Mayes Senr in his actual possession now being by virtue of the said recited Indentures of Bargain and Sael made to him of a Year and of the said Statutes and to his Heirs and assigns forever the afore said Tract or Parcell of two hundred acres of Land and Premises with the appurtenances and all the Estate Right Title Interest Claime and demand whatsoever of the Said Matt Mayes Junr of in orto the same and every part thereof and the Revertion and Reversions, Remainder and Remanders thereof and of every part there of To have and to hold the said Tract or parcell of Two hundred acres of Land and Premisses with the appurtenances unto the said Matt Mayes Senr his heirs & assigns to the only use and behoof of the said Matt Mayes Senr his Heirs and assigns forever and to and for no other use Intent or purpose whatsoever In Witness whereof the said Matthew Mayes Jr hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year first above. Deed Book 1, Page 67 (113 renumbered) Mathew Mayes, wife Elizabeth This Indenture made the Eighteenth day of February in the Year of Lord Christ One thousand seven hundred and thirty-seven Between Matthew Mayes of the County of Prince George of the one part and Joseph Mottly of the County of Gloster of the other part Witnesseth that whereas the said Math Mayes by Indenture baring date the day before the date hereof & for the Consideration therein mentioned hath Bargained & Sold unto ye Land Joseph Mottly his Executors administrators and assigns One Tract or parcell of land Containing by Estimation for hundred acres be the same more or less lying on both sides of little Creek of Flatt Creek in the County of Amelia and Bounded as in the said Indenture is mentioned to be held with ye appurtenances by ye Land Joseph Mottley his executors administrators & assigns from the day next before the date thereof unto the end and term of one whole year from thence next insuing to the Interest that by Virtue thereof and of the Statue for Transfering uses into possesion the said Joseph Mottley might be in the actual possession of the said land and premises and be enabled to take and accept of a grant and release of the Revertion and Inheritance thereof to him and his heirs to the life of time his heirs and assigns forever as by the recited Indenture of Lease more at large apeareth Now this Indenture Wittnesseth that the said Matthw Mayes for and in Consideration of the Sum of Twenty five pounds curant mony to him in hand by the said Joseph Mottley well and truly paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof he that said Matt. Mayes doth hereby acknowledge Hath given granted Bargained Sold Remised Released & Conformed and by these presents for himself and his heirs doth give grant Bargain seel Remise and Release and Confirm unto the said Joseph Mottly in his actual possession now being by Virtue of the said Resited Indenture of bargain and Sail made to him of a Year and of the said Statute and to his Heirs and assigns forever the aforesaid Tract or parcell of land and premices with the appurtenances and all the Estate Right Title Interest Clames and Demand whatsoever of the said Matt Mayes of in and to the same, andof every part thereof and the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders thereof and of every part thereof To Have and to Hold the said Tract of land and premisces with the appurtenances unto the said Joseph Mottly his Heirs and assigns to the only use and behood of the said Joseph Mottly his Heirs ad assigns for every and the said Mathew Mayes for himself his Heirs Executors and administrators and every of them doth Covenant and agree with the said Joseph Mottly his Heirs and assigns there he and every of them the before hereby granted Tract or parcell of Land and premises and every part thereof with the appurtenances will warrant and defend against all persons whatsoever In Witness whereof the said Matthew Mayes hath herewith set his hand and Seal the day & year full above written. Ford John Robertson Will: Booker At a Court held for Amelia County May 12th 1738 Mathew Mayes acknowledged these his Deeds of Lease and Release unto Joseph Mottly which are admitted to record and Elizabeth the wife of the said Mathew being first privately Examined and Voluntarily assenting thereto Relinquished her Right of Dower in the land conveyed by the said deeds. County of Amelia of ye one part and Richard Tunstall of the County of King and Queen of the other part Witnesseth That whereas the sd John Mayes by Indenture bearing date the day before the date hereof, & for the Consideration therein mentioned hath Bargained & sold unto the said Richard Turnstall his Executors administrators and assigns One Tract or parcell of Land Containing by Estimation nine hundred and fifty three acres, as by Pattent lying on both sides of Little Creek of Flatt Creek and on both sides of West Creek and bounded as in the said Indenture is mentioned to be held with the appurtinances by the said Richard Tunstall his Executors administrators and assigns from the day next before the Date thereof unto ye end and term of one whole Year from thence next ensuing to the Intent that by Virtue thereof and of Statutes for transfering uses into possession of the said Richard Tunstall might be in the actuall Possession of the said Land and premises and be enabled to take and accept of a grant and Release, of the Revertion and Inheritance thereof to him and his Heirs to the use of him and his Heirs and assigns forever as by the sd recited Indenture of Lease more at large appeareth -- Now this Indenture Witnesseth that ye said John Mayes for and in Consideration of the sum of Eighty pounds Curant money to him in hand by the said Richard Tunstall well and truly paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said John Mayes doth hereby acknowledge, Hath Given, Granted, Bargained, Sold Remised, Released & Confirmed and by these presents for himself and his Heirs doth give Grant Bargain Sell Remise Release and Confirm unto the said Richard Tunstall in his actuall Possession now being by Virture of the said recited Mayes of the County of Amelia of the one part and Richard Tunstall of the County of King and Queen of the other part Witnesseth that the Said John Mayes for and in Consideration of ye Sum of five shillings Curant money to him in hand paid by the said Richard Tunstall before the sealing and Delivery hereof the receipt whereof the said John Mayes doth hereby acknowledge hath Bargained and Sold in a Thukels, Thence East thirty five degrees North twenty two poles to Royals corner in said Fitzgeralds line, Thence East forty degrees South three hundred and thirteen poles along Royals line to a Corner in the same, Thence South twelve and a half degrees West one hundred and seventy six poles to afaced corner Thence west Eleven degrees South twenty poles to Little Creek and Thence down the same as it meanders to the beginning, Together with all Homes, Orchards, woods, and appurtenances to ye said Land belonging or in any wise appertaining which said Tract of Land was granted to the said John Mayes by Pattent daitted the ninth day of February one thousand seven hundred and thiry seven, To have and to hold the said Tract or parcell of Land and premisses with the appurtenances to ye said Richard Tunstall his Executors administrators and assigns from ye day next before the date hereof unto the end and Term of one whole Year from thence next ensuing to the interest that by virtue Signed Sealed and Delivered John Mayes In presents of us William Clark, James Akin John Lovell At a Court held for Amelia County xvy day of November MDCCXXXJX John Mayes Presented and acknowledged these his Deeds of Leave and Release to Richard Tunstall which were ordered to be recorded and Sarah the Wife of the Said John Mayes being first privately examined and voluntaryly assenting thereto relinquished her right of Dower in the land conveyed by the Said Deeds. July Court 1747 Order Book 2 page 46 A deed of livery and seisin from Ann Mays to William Archer was proved by oath of Thomas Tabb & Henry Powell -- two of the Witnesses thereto. Page 36 William Mayes with Robert Vaughan his security acknowledges their bond for the said Mayes keeping an ordinary. Page 135 On the petition of William Mayes ordered that a license be granted him to keep an Ordinanry at his house giving security whereupon he together with Robert Fleming his security entered into & acknowledged their bond for his keeping the same as the law directs. June Court 1750 Page 245 Ordered that Gardiner Mayes be surveyor of the road from Flatt Creek Bridge at Mayes's to the fork of Bush River Road near Walter's Road in the Roour (?) of Thornton Smith and the same hands to assist him in clearing the land. October Court 1753 Order Book 3, Page 141 An indenture of Bargain & Sale between John Mayes & Ann his wife of the one part and James Mayes of the other part with the memorandum of Livery & Seisin Person endorsed was presented and proved by the oaths of Thomas Spain, Richard Dennis John Clark -- three of the Witnesses thereto & Ordered to be recorded. January Court 1755 Page 207 Joseph May against John Thomas. May receives 4 pounds 12 shillings. May Court 1755 Page 227 A deed with livery & Seisin & receipt from Gardner Mays to George Smith was presented and acknowledged by the said Mays, and on the motion of the said George Smith was ordered to be recorded. 22nd day of May 1760 Order Book 6 Page 9 An indenture of bargain and sale between Gardner Mayes of the one part and William Craddock of the other part was acknowledged by the said Gardner and ordered to be recorded. Phebe, the wife of the said Gardner, personally appeared in court and being privily examined as the Law directs voluntarily relinquished her Right of Dower in the lands and premises thereby conveyed.
