MILITARY RECORDS Revolutionary War Military Pension Record S.31358. John Self, Virginia. John Self was living in Cumberland County, Ky., when he applied for a pension on Sep. 10, 1832, aged 70 years. He states he was born in Amelia County, Va., in 1762, enlisted in Buckingham County, Va., and came to Cumberland County in 1809. Affidavit of fellow soldier, Phillip Winfrey of Adair County, Ky., was made in Cumberland County, Ky., Sep. 12, 1832. John Self. Virginia Line. Co. Commander, Capt. Winston. In the period 1780-81, John served a total of 9 months in 3 three-month periods. His residence at the beginning of his service was Buckingham Co., Va. He fought in the battles of Hot Water Hill, Jamestown and Yorktown. He resided in Cumberland Co., Ky., when he applied for his pension which was certified on 9 Aug., 1833. He was age 70 at the time of his pension application in 1832. Pension number was S31,358. The records indicate that John moved from Virginia to Madison Co., Ky., then to Cumberland County, Ky. in 1809. (The following was transcribed, to the best of my ability, from a National Archives microfilm copy of the pension application) Declaration, in Order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress of the 4th of June 1832 State of Kentucky Cumberland County September Term 1832 On this 10th day of September 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the peace in afor said County Court John Self a resident citizen of said County, aged 70 years, who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress June 4th 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following varied(?) officers, & served as herein Stated . . That he was drafted for three months from Buckingham County Virginia, under Capt. Anthony Winston in January 1780 and marched to Cabbinpoint below Petersburg & there commanded by Major Jones, from there to the Carolinas and received his discharge at Coppersmills - He next entered as a substitute for David Patterson from Buckingham Virginia for three months under Capt. Perkins in Summer of 1780, was in the battle at Hot Water Hill (near James River, was in the battle at James Town & continued in that turn for three months & received his discharge. He next entered as a drafted man under Capt. Watkins in the Summer of 1781 from Buckingham County Virginia, & marched down James River, was in the battle at the taking of Lord Cornwallace and shortly thereafter received his discharge at Winchester Virginia. That he was acquainted with Generals Wayne(?), Fayotte, Steuban & Lawson & Major Boyes(?) - He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any State - Sworn to and subscribed, the day & year aforesaid. Sin(?) John Self X mark And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion that the above named applicant was a revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. Philip Winfrey of the County of Adair Kentucky aged 68 years came into open court, and made oath that the above named John Self served in the revolutionary war as stated by said Self in the first tour expressed in this declaration, that he was intimately acquainted with the said Self while in service - that he served with the said Self while in service - that he served for three months in said first tour. /s/ P. Winfrey James Radford of this County, aged 70 years came into open court, and made oath the above named John Self served in the revolutionary war, as stated by said Self, in the Second & third tours expressed in his declaration, that he was intimately acquainted with said Self while in service, that said Self served three months in each tour, and he served with said Self, and was with him at the surrender of Cornwallas. /s/ Jas. Radford I, Milton King Clerk of the County Court aforesaid, do hereby certify, that the foregoing contains the original proceedings in the matter of the application of John Self for a pension. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal of office, this 12th day of September 1832 M. King Kentucky, Cumberland D. County Govt. This day John Self, the person named in the preceeding declaration, came before me the undersigned a Justice of the peace in aforsaid County and made oath to the following amended declaration - to wit - that from the(sic) his knowledge, recollection & belief, he served in the revolutionary war in the years 1780 & 1781 as a militiaman from the County of Buckingham Virginia, three tours of three months each making in the whole the fullterm of nine months, he served as a private in each tour, and at the end of each tour received parol not written discharges, and for such service, he claimed a pension - that he was born in the year 1762 in the County of Amelia State of Virginia, that he has no record of his age, but from the best information he has or can obtain, he believes he is of the age of 70 years & born at the time afore specified. That he lived in Buckingham County Virginia, when called into service, on each tour, that he continued to live there till the year 1789 when he moved to Madison County, Kentucky & from thence he moved to the Cumberland County, Kentucky in the year 1809, where he now lives & has lived ever since. That he is known by Eli Embree, Ra e Statow, Richard Clayton, Jr., Gabbert & Peter Moulfort, who live in his neighborhood, with whom he is well acquainted & who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services as a Soldier of the Revolution - Sworn to and submitted before me this 6th day of April 1833 His mark Witness Francis H. John X Self and I further certify that there is no clergyman residing in the immediate vicinity of the said John Self, that I am well acquainted with John Self who has subscribed & sworn to the two foregoing declarations, that I believe him to be 70 years old, that he is reputed and believed, in the neighborhood, where he resides, to have been a soldier of the revolution, and that I concur in that opinion.
