All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ==================================================================== 1774 WILL Eliz Greenhill **WP bef 4 Mar 1774 Amelia Co WB 2 p 117-119 In the name of God Amen, I Elizabeth Greenhill of the Parish of Realeigh & County of Amelia, being of perfect mind & disposing memory, blessed by Almighty God, & knowing the uncertainty of human life and that it is appointed for all once to decide, make and ordain this my last Will & Testament in Manner Following, that is to say: In the first place I devise my body to the Earth to be Decently intered at the discretion of my Executors hereafter Constituted and named, Humbly trusting that at the Last day through the merits of our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ that it will receive A happy & Glorious resurrection, and as to such Worldly Estate as it has pleased the divine Providence to bless me with I dispose of the Same in Manner & Form Following, Vizt: Item I give bequeath & Confirm to my Grandson Paschal Greenhill all the slaves he has now in possession for Ever was possessed of by virtue of Right from his Father, and of the Estate of my late husband Paschal Greenhill dec'd, also a negro woman named Dolsey together with her present and future increase, as also I desire & bequeath to the said Paschal the mulatto boy named Henry Curtis and commonly called Harry and is the same as now Attend(s) him in the capacity of Awaittingman, all which said Slaves I do give bequeath & confirm unto the said Paschal his Heirs & Assigns forever. Item I give & bequeath unto Steven Jones all the negroes that were of the Estate of my late husband Paschal Greenhill Dec'd and given to the said Nelson (Jones) and in consequence of his intermarriage of my Grand Daughter Lettice, to him and his Heirs forever. Item whereas my son David Greenhill did by his last Will and Testament direct his Executors therein Named to give unto his son in law Thomas Williams Two Negroes at the discretion of his said Exors, and whereas the said Executors have in consequence thereof given unto the said Thomas a mulatto slave named Ralp & son of mulatto Betty, I do herefore give bequeath & confirm unto the said Thomas the said mulatto slave Ralph to him his Heirs & assigns forever. I do also hereby confirm unto the said Thomas the gift of All such slaves as were given him by my son David Greenhill in consequence of his intermarriage with my Grand Daughter Catherine Greenhill, and I do further give & bequeath to the said Thomas a negro girl named Nancy & daughter of the aforesaid mulatto Betty to him his Heirs & assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Grandson William Greenhill a negro boy named Gilbert to him and his heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath unto my Grandson Samuel Greenhill a negro woman common called blind lucy to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Grandson Philip Whitehead Greenhill a negro girl named Fanny & daughter of the aforesaid Blind Lucy to him his Heirs & assigns forever. Item I give & bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Sarah Greenhill a negro girl named Aggy & daughter, also of the Aforesaid Lucy to her and her heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Martha Greenhill a negro named Dolly, daughter of the said Lucy to her & her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Grand daughter Lucy Greenhill a negro girl named Dinah, daughter also of the said Lucy to her & her Heirs forever. Item I give and devise unto my Grandson Paschal Greenhill to & for the use of my Grand daughter Elizabeth Leigh, in Trust two negroes, which were purchased by me at the Sale of Mr. John Leigh, to wit: Suckey & Betty, upon these conditions, nevertheless That the said Elizabeth have & Thereby give her said Power to devise The said Negroes or otherwise to dispose thereof in her lifetime, to any either of her the said Elizabeth's children as she may see cause, and in case she should die without making such distribution, them(sic) my Will and desire is that the said Paschal Shall, and I do hereby empower him to make such Division of them & their increase, if any, amongst such of the said children and in such manner as he may think best -- and my Will & desire Further that the said slaves continue to remain in the possession of the said Elizabeth and that she have the profits thereof, but that they shall not at any time hereafter be made Liable to pay the debts that John Leigh, her said Husband, have contracted or may contract in future. Item My will and desire is that all the Rest residue or Remainder of my Estate be it of What nature or kind soever & not herein Particularly disposed of, be equally divided amongst my Grand children to wit: Joseph Williams, Samuel Williams, Philip Whitehead, Sary, Lucy, & Martha Greenhill to them and their Heirs forever, as the may attain to the Age of twenty one years or Marriage & in case either of them should die before they arrive of age or marriage, then I do hereby give and bequeath his part so dying to the survivors of them. I desire that my Estate may not be appraised. And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute & appoint my Grand Sons Paschal & Joseph Greenhill & my Friend Thomas Williams Executors of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and Disannulling all other Wills by me made. Lawson Wood Jones, Jun'r Note: There was no evidence in the Will Book as to when this will was presented in Court, proven, or ordered to probate, or to be recorded. **The next item in the Will Book was dated March 1774. (Elizabeth nee Hickman Greenhill, dec'd, mother of David Greenhill, died two years after her son. Her husband was supposedly Dr. Paschal Greenhill who died about 1733.
