Will of Garner Mayes, 1806  Amelia Co. VA

May Court, 1806


I Garner Mayes of Amelia County do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form 
following that is to say, first, I desire that as much of my estate as can be best spared be sold after my 
decease and out of the moneys arising therefrom be appropriated to the payment of my just debts, secondly, 
I lend to my wife Judith Mayes the residue of the (Can't read this word) estate during her natural life for the 
purpose of maintaining and educating my children and after her decease to be equally divided among the 
survivors of them.  And lastly I do hereby appoint my beloved wife Judith Mayes executrix and William 
Burton executor to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former testament by me 
heretofore made.   In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this eighth day of 
March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six.

Of the above named Garner Mayes in presence of us:   Cheadle Burch, Judith Burch, Jacob Robert, Milton

Codicil to the last will and testament of Garner Mayes.  Item, It is my will and desire that my executors 
named as soon as they may think proper after my decease sell a nego woman by the name of Hannah and 
also by the name of Sally for the purpose of raising a sum of money to purchase a tract of land intended for 
Judith Mayes during her life and at her decease to be sold and the moneys arising therefrom equally divided 
among the surviving children.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth 
day of (can't read the month) in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and six.
