Crews Cemetery Location: From Post Office, Main Street north .5 mile to Route #30; thence north along Route #30, to Route #622; thence east on Route #622. On south side of Road. Madison Heights, Virginia. Amherst County OWNERS: Cemetery now (1936) under control of Madison Heights Methodist Church through an arrangement of Cemetery Trustees, an indirect ownership, made possible by an act of the Legislature in 1903. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is enclosed with a wire fence. The front side to the road is ornamental wire but the balance is barbed wire. The front side contains two gates, one for pedestrians, the other for vehicles. Large rock pillars are on either side of this entrance. On the southwest side facing a private road known as the George Penn Road, is another entrance for vehicles without a gate, this entrance is connected with the from vehicular entrance by a king of circular road, some parts of which are hardly in a passable condition, having never been completed by C.W.A. in 1933, and who spent some $8,000 on it, clearing, grading, etc. About half of it known as the old part is in fairly good condition and clean, the remainder is grown up with broom sage and washed with gulleys. The old part is on top of a ridge, the remainder slopes down hill towards the south at about 10% grade. The fence is in excellent condition, from painted black. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: G. N. Mays, Madison Heights, Virginia, has been for some years caretaker paid by private individuals. In Memory of Rev. Masonic Emblem William Henry Kulp Jan. 14, 1862 Aug. 14, 1929 (This man was a diplomatic high pressure salesman and sold stock “First issue” promotional)(Klu Klux Klan emblem on grave) John James Jones 1841 - 1935 A Christian Gentleman (Was Postmaster of Elon, Amherst County, until the office went out of existence. He was in the mercantile business there with his father. His father attended to the finances. After his death his son, John James, settled up the business and came to Madison Heights and lived a bachelor. Many Years afterwards he found an unpaid bill in his trunk for Mdse. bought when he and his father were in business, from a wholesaler by the name of Williams in Lynchburg. He immediately hunted up the man to pay him the bill. He had been dead many years. Finally he located a son, Cashier, Lynchburg Trust and Saving Bank and insisted that he take the money and receipt the bill. The son finally did reluctantly. He put the money, some thirty-odd dollars, to the credit of his burial (Jones) expense, and notified John Mays, with whom he lived, and when the old man died this money helped to defray his burial expense.)
