Amherst County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Military Records Susannah (Mrs. Joseph) WELCH, Widow's Pension Application, 1843 The deposition of Ezra Morrison a resident of Lincoln County, Ky, taken at his own house, the 14th day of January, 1841, to be read as evidence in favor of the application of Mrs. Susannah Welch for a pension. The deponent being 84 years old, deposith and sayith that he was acquainted with both Joseph Welch and Captain Samuel Cabel during the Revolutionary War. They were both at that time citizens of Amherst County, Va. and in the fall of 1776, the said Joseph enlisted for the term of two years in the said County as a regular soldier in the Company then commanded by the said Captain Samuel Cabel whose Company belonged to the 6th VA Regiment. A few weeks after the enlistment of the said Joseph Welch, he removed from the said County of Amherst to the North with the said Captain Samuel Cabel and said Regiment. In the year 1789, the said Joseph Welch and his wife Susannah and the family moved to the Sate of Kentucky. In the year 1790 the deponent also moved from the County of Amherst, Va and settled where he now lives and within a half a mile of the said Joseph Welch. The said Welch continued there for about Thirty years and then moved with his family to the County of Washington now Marion, Ky and there died as the deponent has been informed, leaving the said Susannah a widow and further saith not. Ezra Morrison ‘his mark’ State of Kentucky Lincoln County The foregoing deposition of Ezra Morrison was this day sworn to and subscribed by the said Ezra Morrison before me the undersigned Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Lincoln, and certify the said Ezra Morrison is aware of truth and veracity given under my hand this 14th day of January, 1841. P. ‘sig’ The deposition of Frederick Mouser? a resident of Marion County, Ky taken this 29th day of August 1840 to be used as evidence in favor of the application of Mrs. Susannah Welch for a pension. Deponent being six four years old on the 23rd just deposeth and saith that Joseph Welch deceased moved to the County above about twenty one or two years ago and settled adjoining the deponents farm that he now resides on, the deponent because acquainted with the said Welch a short time before his removal to the County and on his becoming a neighbor they were together almost every day until the death of the said Joseph Welch. The deponent has sett? many and often times and heard the said Welch recount his service while in the Revolutionary War which he took great delight in its telling. The deponent further saith that the said Welch told him of the service he performed and the officers he served under and ___? ___? ___? ___? but it has been so long and his attention not having been called to reflect on it until this moment that he cannot at this time recollect the service or the officers he said he served under except General Morgan. He recollects perfectly well having the said Welch say he served under that officer, deponent further saith that from his first acquaintance with the said Welch until his death he considered him a man of the strictest honor and a man of unsullied character and of truth and he died and yet believes the said Joseph Welch was a regular soldier under General Morgan. The said Joseph Welch died about fifteen years since and his widow the said Susannah who still? remains on the old farm and a near neighbor has maintained? a widow ever since the death of her husband and further saith not. The above deposition of Frederick Mouser? was this day sworn to and subscribed before me the undersigned Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid, and certify the said Frederick M’adrian? of strick integrety and truth given from under my hand the day and year first above written James Dever J. State of Kentucky Marion County I Rutherfor H Rountree Clerk of the Marion County Court certify that James Dever who name is signed to the foregoing certificate is and has at the time of doing the same an acting Justice of the Peace for Marion County duly commissioned and qualified and to all his official acts faith and credit are due and that his signature is genuine on Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand seal of office at Lebanon this 13th Nov. 1840 R. Rountree This is to Certify, That it appears from a list in this office of such Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Continental Line, during the Revolutionary War as settled their Accounts, and received Certificates for the balance of their Full Pay, according to an Act of Assembly, passed the November Session, 1781, that a certificate issued on the 13th day of May 1786, in the name of Joseph Welch as a Soldier of the Infantry for 20.2.3, which certificate appears to have been delivered to Col. S. Cabell and was given for services prior to the 1st January, 1782. Given under my hand at the Auditor’s Office, Richmond this 17th day of July 1884 [this date apparently misread] J Heath Auditor Kentucky Susannah Welch widow of Joseph Welch who was a private in the Virginia Line for 2 years Inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 80 Dollars cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1843 Certificate of Pension issued the 23rd day of August, 1843 and sent to ??? State of Kentucky Marion County On the 13th day of November 1840 personally appeared before me James Dever a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Marion and State aforesaid Susannah Welch a resident of said County aged seventy seven years who being first duly sworn according to law ? her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 7th, 1838 entitled An Act Granting said? pay and pension to certain widows, that she is the widow of Joseph Welch who enlisted as a regular soldier in the service of his Country in the County of Amherst in the state of Virginia continued in the year seventeen hundred and seventy six for the term of two years and served out his term of enlistment in the Company commanded by Captain Samuel Cabell and in the Regiment demonstrated? as the 7th Virginia Regiment and at the expiration of said two years the said Joseph Welch received an honorable discharge and after receiving his discharge he was taken sick and sent to the hospital where he continued until his recovery and then continued with the Army ____? ____? the time of his sickness, she further declares that she has seen and read the said Joseph Welch discharge which he received for his two years service a long time since his death and frequently during his lifetime, but what has become of said discharge she does not know. It has since been misplaced or lost so that at this time she cannot get it to file with her declaratory. She further declares that she was married to the said Joseph Welch in the County of Amherst in the state of Virginia in the month of August, 1786. That her husband the aforesaid Joseph Welch died in the month of February, 1825. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794 , she further states that her husband the aforesaid Joseph Welch served under General Morgan. That she knows of no record of her marriage but has a family record of the age of her children in her bible which she will have filed. Susannah Welch ‘her mark’ The deposition of Miss Elizabeth Welch a resident of Marion County Ky taken this 13th day of November 1840 to be used as evidence in favor of the application of Mrs. Susannah Welch for a pension under the act of Congress passed July 7th 1838. Deponent being 52 years old deposeth and saith that she is the Daughter of Joseph Welch deceased and Susannah the applicant, the deponent has no doubts her father did serve as a soldier in the Revolutionary War she has heard him so frequently in his lifetime speak of the services rendered in the Company commanded by Lieutenant Sawney? Rose and Captain Samuel Cabell and that he belonged to Morgans Rifle Regiment. She further states that she has frequently seen and read ____? her father lifetime and since his death the discharge he received for his 2 years service under the said Captain Cabell what has become of the discharge she does not know. She further states her father, the aforesaid Joseph Welch died on the twenty seventh day of February eighteen hundred and twenty five and that her mother has remained a widow ever since to the present period. She further states that she is well acquainted with the family record of the age of her father and mothers children which record was written on one leaf of the family bible and was in her fathers possession many years previous to his death and was in her mothers possessions up to the 5th of March last at which time it was taken out to be used in her deposition, taken at that date for the said purpose that this deposition is now taken. The said family record is in the hand writing of John Garland a school master and was written many years prior to her fathers death, the said family record commenced in these words Viz. Henry Harper was born March 3rd 1783, and then commences with the age of her father and mothers children Viz. Elizabeth Welch was born June 25th 1787 which record is marked and made a part of these her deposition . The father died 1783-1784 in Amherst and Susannah remarried to Joseph Welch in 1785.
