Obituary of Sarah L. Turner, 1834 - Amherst Co. VA Lynchburg Virginian, 18 Aug 1834, page 3, col. 5: "DEPARTED this life, on the 11th inst., after a painful illness of eleven days, Mrs. SARAH L. TURNER, consort of Mr. Lawson Turner, of Amherst County, aged 32 years, leaving behind her a bereaved husband, eight helpless children, and a numerous train of relatives and friends, to mourn her untimely and irreparable loss. How transitory are all sublunary jobs! How evanescent the short tenure by which we hold our frail existence! But a few days ago, she whose loss we now deplore, moved joyously in the peaceful little circle of her household, fondly dreaming of coming years of domestic comfort. Who would have thought that thus soon, that active step and dulcet voice would be stilled and hushed in the "dull cold silence" of the deep damp grave! But, Death enters, and there's no defence!" -- Alas! how often do we have to submit to the dire visitation of the monster, and yield up to his chill embrace the cherished ones of our bosom. He enters, at an unexpected moment, the happy domestic circle, and panics all with horror; regardless of the prayers and cries of agonized friends, he selects the loveliest for his prey. In vain may we cling around them, with imploring looks and streaming eyes; heedless of our woe, with stern purpose and fixed grasp, he tears from our fond embrace the very object that makes life most dear to us, and leaves desolate the smiling group, that, but a few days before, looked forward to long years of uninterrupted bliss. But why--should we sorrow for our departed friend? Our loss is her eternal gain. Ten years, an exemplary member of the M. E. Church, she died in the triumphs of the Gospel, with a full assurance of a blissful entrance into that rest prepared above for the people of God." Submitted by Jean B.
