Appomattox County DESCRIPTION: Dennis O’Conner is my name, Ireland is my nation, Virginia is my swelling place, And in Heaven, I expect salvation. When I am dead and in my grave And all my bones are rotten, This Blessed Book will tell my name When I am quite forgotten. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Mr. O’Conner was born in Ireland, March 1, 1824, died at Appomattox, July 25, 1883. He was being educated in Ireland for a priest, but disliked it so much that he ran away and came to Virginia, at the age of nineteen. Two of his daughters and several grand-children are living here now (1936). He wrote this epitaph before his death and requested it to be put on his tombstone.
