(Special to The Times-Dispatch.) APPOMATTOX, VA., April 25. - This morning at eleven o'clock, Joel H. Harvey was struck over the head with a stick in the hands of Elester Sears, a deputy tax collector. The blow was of such force and violence that Harvey never spoke again, and died at seven o'clock to-night. It is said that the difficulty arose over a discussion of an old tax ticket, and that Harvey cursed Sears, when Sears picked up a stick lying in the road and dealt him the fatal blow over the head. Sears is a young man in his twenty-first year, and when seen at the jail to-night, seemed to be not disposed to talk of the affair. He comes from one of the oldest families in the State, and the young man himself has always borne a good reputation. Mr. Harvey was a merchant and farmer at Rose Bower, nine miles north of this place, and was a son of Thomas Harvey, a well-to-do farmer of this county. Both, father, and his dead son were highly esteemed and prominently connected. The deceased was said to be under influence of liquor when the trouble arose. He leaves a young wife and several small children. Much regret is expressed over the sad affair by the friends of the parties. Sears surrendered himself to Deputy Sheriff McKinney as soon as he heard Harvey was dead. Court convenes here on the 14th, when his case will probably be given to the grand jury. file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/appomattox/obits/h/h610j4ob.txt
