From the Arlington County historical marker posted on Washington Blvd. by the access way. Difficult to see, this unique cemetry is a small 1/8 acre (my estimate - probably smaller) lot with a clutter of headstones in one corner and a 6-foot tall granite slab in the middle with all the names and dates engraved in it. It is sandwiched between a large YMCA lot behind it and a small commercial lot in front. It is through the commercial lot that it is reached. It gives the impression that the original graveyard was plowed under during construction of the YMCA, but the county historical society found out in time to preserve this plot, scavange some headstones and compile some records with which the large slab was burdened. One of the saddest graveyards I have seen - and the bravest. Bravo to the Arlington County and whoever else was involved in expending the considerable resources (time and money) to save this bit of history! Note: The slab is inscribed with the bare essentials: first name, MI, last name, birth and death dates (where available). I found some additional info in the clutter of headstones (middle names, day and month, shared headstone, relation) which I have included. Also, note that the last two were not on the large slab, and are entirely from a headstone found in the clutter. ======================= 57 graves ============================= Ball(27), Birch, Boldin(5), Croson, Darne(2), Donaldson(9), Marcey(5), McCullins(2), Stricker(3), Thrift(2) ================================================================ Ball, Ensign John 1746-1814 6th Va Regiment Feb 26, 1776 Boldin, John Wesley 1843 Oct - 1908 Jan 15 Co.D. 3rd Penna.
