Herndon Cemetery Location: 11 miles southwest of Staunton, Va., at the junction of Routes #340 and #693. Augusta County This is probably the best kept of the older graveyards and at one time was the property of the Bumgardner family. There are beautiful trees and shrubs here and fallen and broken stones has been taken care of. 1768 is the earliest burial marked but many river stones have inscriptions scratched on them which are not now legible. Give Revolutionary Soldiers graves have been marked by the D.A.R. and it is believed that there are more. A story which may be of interest is inserted here: “The time of the war two Union soldiers were quartered in the home of the Bumgardner daughters. She had two small children and others living with her. The men quartered on her were ill with typhus fever and the troops would not move them. They died and are buried here. The two children also contracted the disease as did a brother-in-law and a niece, and a sister. The brother and niece died and are buried here but the sister recovered only to feel the ill effects of typhus as long as she lived. Her daughters still live in Staunton. In additional to the whiles who died two negro slaves also died from the disease.” In Memory of Elizabeth E.H.A. Button Born April 28th, 1852 Died June 1th 1855 Sacred to the memory of Eliza J.
