Herndon Cemetery Location: About 2 miles west of Fort Defiance, on Route #744 Augusta County This is a private plot, enclosed by a stone wall, and is in very good condition, as the Houff family maintain a fund for its care. There are six readable inscriptions and a few river stones which do not appear to have been marked. The earliest definite date seems to be 1849 but the river stones are much older. This family was connected with the Vanlear family, who furnished several ministers to churches in the county. William N. Houff Died Aug. 13, 1854 Aged ___ Sarah A. daughter of J.A. & E.J.
