Herndon Cemetery Location: On the Garber farm, about .5 mile west of New Hope, Va., and is reached by a side road and a lane. Augusta County This graveyard is situated on the top of a low rise and surrounded by wheat and cornfields. There is a thick growth of aspens and a hedge around it. The trees are very close together and it was necessary to crawl under them to reach the stones. This is one of the most interesting of the private plots and the stones must have been very beautiful at one time. There is carving of roses and cypress trees and much scroll work. The spelling is interesting and some of the letters are reversed. Many of the inscriptions are hand-scratched with some sharp instrument and are not quite plumb. The earliest date is 1799 and the latest is 1857. Some stones are broken and a few cannot be read. The stones have scattered and some are piled at one side so, do not rest above the graves they cover. The ground is uneven; there are many holes which may have been made by groundhogs. This plot, now owned by the Garbers was obtained by an early grant, and originally owned by the Humbert family. It is believed that the original owner is buried here, but if so the stone has disappeared.
