Herndon Cemetery Location: Churchville, Virginia Augusta County The Lutheran Graveyard, Churchville, Virginia, is attached to the present Lutheran Church which is new and replaces two others, previously built. It is well kept but there are many sunken, broken and weathered markers as well as many wooden ones. Some of the inscriptions are in German for this was one of the earlier German settlements in the county. The German used is not high German but appears to be some dialect. The Paul Sieg whose epitaph appears in this list built the first house in Churchville and was the leading citizen to the time of his death. His great grandson still lives in Churchville and was pastor of this church at one time. It is not known when the church was organized but the land was registered in the Court House at Staunton in 1808. Some of these stones are in German, illegible for the most part and others in English are also illegible.
