Herndon Cemetery Location: 2 miles northwest of New Hope, Va., on Route #778 Augusta County This is a well kept graveyard and has many interesting epitaphs. The earliest date is 1829 and some of the dates are written differently from any found elsewhere. One Civil War veteran killed at the Battle of Piedmont is buried here. There are several German names and names which were changed at various times from the original spelling. Rev. John Garber Died July 16, 1854 Aged 62 Yrs. & 2 ds Daniel W. (broken) Born Dec. 24, 1811 Died Feb. 27, 1856 Aged 44 Yrs., 2 Mo. 3 ds In the morning of life he passed to the home to whence no traveler returns. His friends cherish his memory with true affection and mourn his premature death.
