Herndon Cemetery Location: 1 mile south from Deerfield, Va., on Route #600 Augusta County This graveyard is across the road from the church. It is not in the best condition, being overrun with honeysuckles and wild rose briars. Some of the graves have sunken and one has been so dug into by groundhogs that the corner of the casket is visible. There are many wooden markers and also many brown river stone slabs from which the inscriptions have disappeared. Some are buried so deeply that the inscriptions cannot be gotten. Here lies buried Col. Thomas Hughart, a Revolutionary soldier, his wife and his father-in-law, Rev. John Montgomery who was pastor of Rocky Spring Lebanon and Windy Cove for many years and a Trustee and teacher of the famous “Liberty Hall Academy”.
