Herndon Cemetery Location: Located on Route #56 half way between Summerdean and McKinley and about 16 miles southwest of Staunton, Va. Augusta County It is a community plot attached to the church and situated across the road from it. It is in excellent condition, well mowed and although some of the stones have been broken and some have fallen, these have nearly all been reset or propped up. Many Civil War veterans are here, some killed in action, and here also is the grave of Rev. Luther Emmerson, a grandson of Ralph Waldo Emmerson, who was pastor of Shemariah Church for fifteen years. He did not die until 1867 but his epitaph is included because of its historical significance. 1842 seems to be the earliest and such names as Randolph, Hogshead and McCutchan appear many times.
