Herndon Cemetery Location: On the Augusta side of the Augusta-Rockbridge County line, 1 mile west of Craigsville, Va., on Route #5 Augusta County This is both a family and community plot and the tennant thinks it does not belong to the farm. He says someone comes once in a while and clears some of it. It is very bad condition. There are many briars and the old barbed wire was thrown into the lot when new wire was put in the fence. It appears that groundhogs have also been in the lot. It is on the side and top of a low hill. Many stones have disappeared; many inscriptions are obliterated and the river stones and wooden markers appear not to have been marked. It is known that Samuel and Polly Craig, early settlers of this section, are buried here but no stones are marked to indicate it. Two stones are deeply sunken and many graves are sunken. The earliest stone is dated 1816 or 1826. Here is also the grave of another Irish immigrant, John Sterrett, whose stone is new, probably replacing an old one. Margaret Craig Born Decr. 2, 1783 Died.
