Herndon Cemetery Location: About 11 miles south east of Staunton, Va., at the junction of Routes #273 and #640 Augusta County The graveyard is attached to the church in two plots, one a new burial ground which is well kept and tended and a second, the old part, lies west of the church. This plot is enclosed in a stone wall and while it is not carefully tended is in fairly good condition. Vines and myrtle have spread over the entire plot but it is free from briars. Many of the stones are weathered and not readable. Most of the stones had to be cleaned before they could be read and some have fallen, but the an old graveyard it is in good condition. The earliest burial here seems to have been in 1747. Several ministers of the Tinkling Spring Church and their wives are also buried here, but I found no Revolutionary soldiers. There are several Civil War veterans. This church was taken from the Old Stone Parish and was served by the same pastor, the Rev. Craig. Mary Susan Daughter of S.D. & s. Coiner Died June 25, 1856 Aged 12 Yrs. 3 Mo. & 9 ds Dearest sister, thou hast left us Here thy loss we deeply feel But the God that hath bereft us He can all our sorrow heal Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled The Heaven with joy to meet thee Where no farewell tear is shed. Here lies interred the Body of the Rev. John McCue who expired Sabbath morning Sept. 20th A.D. 1818 in his 66th Year Having served his congregation in dignified and faithful discharge of all relative duties, he was suddenly removed from labour to rest. His relatives, numerous friends and the Church deplore the loss of his talents, erdition, eloquence and evengelical ministrations – especially the Church of Tinkling Spring amongst whom he had arduously laboured in the ministry for 27 years This monument was erected by his Sons, in token of filial esteem and regard.
