Herndon Cemetery Location: At the junction Routes #736 and #726 about 11 miles northeast of Staunton, Virginia. Augusta County This graveyard is attached to Union Church which was built in 1774 and later rebuilt in 1850. The plot is well cared for and there are not as many fallen, broken and illegible stones as frequently are found in other cemeteries. There seems to be no historical events in connection with this site, but there is an interesting stone here. The Rev. John Hendren, D.D., who was a very famous old preacher of the section has a family lot enclosed with an iron fence. Here both of his wives are buried and his children have erected a shaft to his memory. In the center of the plot is the grave of his first wife; her grave is entirely covered by a black stone slab about a foot in thickness and carved into the shape of an old fashion coffin. Rebecca H.
