Herndon Cemetery Location: 8 miles north of Staunton, Va., on Route #11. To reach it one must pass through the gate at the end of the parsonage driveway and through another at the end of the barnyard. Augusta County It is the property of the Old Stone Church and was probably originally owned by Robert Poage from whom the land for Old Stone Church was secured. It was intended as a burial ground for the church, but if one was erected near it, it has disappeared and the new cemetery is located across the road adjacent to the present church. It is much overgrown with vines and briars and many of the stones have fallen. There are a number of wooden markers, illegible now and a large number of stones so sunken that the inscriptions cannot be secured in whole. This plot was originally laid out in the form of an old-fashioned coffin and was enclosed by a stone wall with a rounded top. The present fence is of wood and stone, probably part of the original wall. Many soldiers of the Revolutionary War and some Civil War veterans are buried here as well as the first pastor of Old Stone Church and a few subsequent ones. Many of the stones are of the old brown river stones and the D.A.R. have replaced Revolutionary markers with new white granite ones. Sarah Jane Daughter of C. & E.
