Elizabeth, wife of Thos. Penniray, a soldier. Slave Will convicted, and to
be hanged for the murder of Hans. Cloverfield.
1778--June 22d, Danl. Smith, Jr., vs. Thomas Luton, on attachment.
Joseph Smith, Ensign in Captain Cravens' Company, being empowered to
draw the pay of a company of militia under said Cravens drawn-out into
service being sworn as garnishee declared he had in his hands 91 days of
said Luton's pay in said company, amounting to £6-1-4. Jno. Davis, Benj.
Harrison, Reuben Harrison, Gawen Hamilton, Wm. Herring, Michael
Coger recommended to be added to the County Court. Reward offered
for the recapture of slave Will, supra.
1778--August 24th, Will of John Ritse (Rilse) recorded. George Rootes
(Roates) qualifies attorney. Will of Thomas Wilmot recorded; his son
Thomas. Administration of John Cravens granted widow Margaret and

1779--March 23, Relief of Rachel, wife of John Cash, a soldier. Henry
Penninger bound to Grand Jury for speaking disrespectful words towards
Congress and the Currency. Philip Akert and Job Reynolds convicted
of conspiring with enemies of the State. Anthony Lewis's will partly
proved.
1779--April 26th, Thomas Shanklin qualifies Lieutenant.
1779--April 27th, John Morris, son of James Morris, to be bound.
Daniel Helfrey is drafted to go out on the frontier. Henry Lung's will
proved. Wm. Chesnutt receives proportional part of estate of Daniel Callahan
for his four children in right of their mother Catherine, daughter of
said Callahan, and late wife of said Chesnutt. Jno. Huston appointed
guardian of Archibald Huston, orphan of Archibald Huston. Richard
Reagan recommended First Lieutenant and qualified. Joseph Smith
recommended Second Lieutenant and qualified. Saml. Fortchet recommended
Ensign. All in Captain Danl. Smith's Company.
1779--May 24th, Charity orphan of Martin Humble to be bound. Jno.
Magill appointed guardian of Jane, orphan of Archibald Huston. Mary
Huston (widow), ditto, of Eliz., orphan of Archibald Huston. Andrew
Bird qualified Captain. Michael Bowyer qualified attorney.
1779--May 25th, Barbara, wife of Henry Lung, refuses to qualify
administratrix c. t. a. Robert Cravens appointed guardian to Ro.
Cravens, infant and heir-at-law of John Cravens. Anthony Lewis's will
finally proved. Mary, orphan of Thomas Gregg, to be bound out. Catherine,
orphan of John Cloverfield, to be bound out.
1779--June 28th, Josiah Davidson refuses to perform duties of Sheriff,
and these are recommended, viz: Abraham Smith, John Gratton, George
Boswell.
1779--July 26th, Abraham Smith qualifies Sheriff. Will of Francis
Hughes proved and Aaron Hughes qualifies executor. Francis McBride
bound to Grand Jury for speaking treasonable words. Will of George
Zimmerman, alias Carpenter, proved; Ann, George, and Adam Zimmerman
qualify executors.
1779--August 23, Henry Penninger informs the Court that Gerard Erwin
has propagated news tending to raise tumults and seditions in the State;
bound to Grand Jury. Will of James Baggs proved. Thos. Baggs qualifies
executor. Relief of Bridget, wife of John Fowler, a soldier; three
small children. Wm. Nalle recommended escheator. Relief of Barbara,
wife of Geo. Woolridge, a soldier. Relief of Mary, wife of Jno. Rylie,
a soldier. Estate of Adam Ellwine committed.
1779--August 24th, Relief of Elizabeth Spikeard, wife of Julius and
mother of George Spikeard, soldiers. These are bound out: Moses Deaver.
born 24th April, 1770; Wm. Deaver, born 10th March, 1772; Robert
Deaver, born 25th March, 1774; Daniel Deaver, born 4th March, 1777.
These are shortly to remove, viz: Spencer Breeden, Fred. Stoneberger, Saml.
Short, Thomas Windall, Wm. Ferret. Relief of Ann, wife of Claypole

Gum, a soldier. Caleb Cash, son of John Cash, aged five years, 10th
October last, to be bound. Relief of Ann, mother of Wm. McCay (McCoy),

1779-- November 23d, Relief of Samuel Thornhill, father of Jno. Thornhill,
a soldier. Proved that Robt. Menzies was a soldier in Captain Hog's
Rangers in 1758, and in Captain Gist's Company in the campaign of 1760.
Ditto, John Smith (brother of Abraham, his heir-at-law) was Lieutenant
in Captain Jno. Smith's Company of Rangers, 1756, and was killed at Fort
Vanse (Vause). Building of a Court House to be let. These recommended
Captains, viz: Josiah Harrison, Richard Reagan, George Huston.
Andrew Shanklin recommended First Lieutenant; John Huston, Second
Lieutenant; Daniel Nelson, Ensign in Captain Huston's Company. Robert
Smith recommended First Lieutenant; Jno. Rutherford, Second Lieutenant;
Elliot Rutherford, Ensign in Captain Reagan's Company. Jo. Dictum,
ditto, Second Lieutenant; Ro. Harrison, Ensign in Captain Jos. Harrison's
Company.
1780--March 27th, Will of. Wm. Hinton proved; widow Mary. Will of
Saml. Skidmore proved; widow Ruth. Ann, widow of Joseph Skidmore,
has dower assigned in land conveyed by Joseph to his son Samuel. William
Ward bound to Grand Jury for speaking treasonable words. Mary, daughter
of John Cash, to be bound. Following Militia officers qualify, viz:
Josiah Harrison, Captain; Jacob Havener, Ensign; Richard Reagen, Captain;
Elliott Rutherford, Ensign; Jeremiah Beesley, Captain; Joseph

1780--March 28th, David Laird proved he served as Corporal in Captain
Hog's Company Rangers from its raising in 1757 until disbanding at Bedford.
George Huston qualified Captain. Jacob Pence proved he served
as soldier in Captain Hog's Company. Richard Huston (?) recommended
First Lieutenant in Captain Fitzwater's Company. Thos. Fitzwater
recommended Second Lieutenant in Captain Fitzwater's Company. Robert
Minnis proves he was a soldier in Captain Byrd's Regiment. John Stevenson
proves he served as soldier in the Independent Company under Captain
McClenachan and served in Bocquet's campaign.
1780--April 24th, estate of Jno. Simons (Limont?) committed. George
Armentrout proves service as soldier in Captain Hog's Rangers. Philip
Moyer qualifies First Lieutenant. Daniel Grubb proves service as soldier
in Captain Hog's Rangers.
1780--May 22d, Catherine, orphan of John Cloverfield, to be bound.
Mary, orphan of John Cloverfield, to be bound. Massey, orphan of Geo.

1780--Frederick Price, charged with drinking the King's health and
