The following is a copy of "Hume's Old Field Book" used as evidence in the case of Moffett ads. McPheeters in the Staunton District Court and filed with the papers of that cause in the Circuit Clerk's office of Augusta County. It is a small book, leather bound, home-made, measuring 3 by 5 inches. On the cover, which was evidently attached after its completion, is the following: "To Cap. James Frayzer, Long Meadow" "Rejected by the Court at Sept. Court, 1802, on the objection of Moffett." Among the other papers is a slip containing courses from this book, which slip is endorsed: "Extracts from Hume's Old Field Book read in Evidence in the Suit Moffett vs. McPheeterz." And written on the back of the same slip is: "Recd. of John Coalter, C. S. D. C., a small field Book of Hume's filed in the suit of McPheeters and Moffett which I will deliver to James Frayser. May 4th, 1799. ------- Saml. Long." NOTE.--The corners of the first five pages of the original Field Book were torn off which explains the incompleteness of the subject-matter on those pages. 370 (1)--Surveyes of Geo. This book contains directions to the County Surveyor to lay off metes and bounds and proper description the number of acres claimed, and in the location designated. The purpose was to perfect title whether in the claimant or his assignee, under some of the various laws. In many instances actual settlement on the land had been perfected before the entry was made for survey. It does not appear that all these entries were surveyed, and in some cases the lands were transferred without any other formality than delivery of possession, or were abandoned before survey. The following notes constitute a complete list of the entries during the period covered by them, but the book itself extends over a much greater period.
