Sherwood Black, 65, of Route 4, Box 92 died Saturday afternoon, November 23, 1991, in the Waynesboro Community Hospital after an illness with Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was born June 5, 1926 in Lynchburg, the son of Roy Hamilton and Ruby Coffey Black. Mr. Black was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, life member of the Stuarts Draft V.F.W. Post No. 9339. He was instrumental in forming the local muscular dystrophy support group in 1989. He was employed with the former G.E. Company in Waynesboro from 1955 to 1983. He then became employed with Genicom from 1983 to 1985. He retired completing over 30 years of service. He was rehired in 1985 to 1986 as a consultant for Genicom. Mr. Black served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 having served in the Pacific during World War II. Survivors include his wife Mary Chandler Black; two daughters, Mrs. Timothy (Susan) Dameron, of Greenville, Mrs. William (Sharon) Betlej of Staunton; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven Hamilton and Joyce F. Black of Verona. Also sister Margaret Ann Black of Stuarts Draft; seven grandchildren, Chrity Dameron, Carmen Dameron, Seth Dameron, Erin Betlej, Anna Betlej, Jason Black, and Andrew Black. He is also survived by one nephew and a number of nieces. A service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Calvary United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Roy O. Creech Jr. and the Rev. Charles C. Ramsey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339 will conduct military rites at graveside. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Deshong, Carl Taylor, Joe Patterson, Jack Crumett, Ralph Weaver, and R.L. (Peetie) Eavers, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Eavers, Orvin Kiser, B.G. Fitzgerald, Reed Forbes, Don Croiser, George A. (Buddy) Cash, Dave Wiggins, J.H. Weaver, Bob Killingsworth and Franklin Sprouse. The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. this evening (Mon.) at the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter Funeral Home. Friends may also call anytime at the residence.
