Obituary: John Harris & James Vines, Oct 1909 Source: Staunton Spectator - October 27, 1909 Contributor: Oscar Nuckols ----------------------------------------------------- Two Deaths Near Greenville. Greenville, VA. Oct. 23. - Mr. James Vines of this place, who was paralyzed a couple of weeks ago, passed quietly away on Sunday last. The deceased was a son of the late Major Dowell Vines. He was in his 73rd year and was orderly sergeant of Company E. 5th Va. Infantry during the civil war. He was a highly respected citizen, and a member for many years of the M. E. Church, South. He leaves an aged wife, who was Miss Jennie Apple be-fore marriage, two brothers, Isaac and Juette Vines, one sister, Mrs. Samuel Miller, one son, Dorsey Vines, and two married daughters. The funeral was conducted at the Baptist church by his pastor, Rev. R. L. Eutsler on Monday at 3 o'clock. Interment was in the Methodist cemetery. One the same day at 4 o'clock Mr. Eutsler was called upon to hold funeral rites at Pines Chapel over the remains of John Harris, son of the late Henry Harris. The deceased was also a Confederate veteran. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Painter and Miss Mary Ann Harris, and three brothers, Messrs. James, Ras and Peter Harris. As both burials were performed by Undertaker Mitchell of this place, the last one was so belated that lanterns were used.
