AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA – WILL: GEORGE CRAIG, 1794 ----¤¤¤---- Will of George Craig January 30, 1794 In the name of God Amen I George Craig of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia being in perfect health and strength thanks be to God for the same but calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death either in an ordinary or an extraordinary manner I do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give recommend my soul to the mercy of God who gave it and by body to be buried interred as I may perhaps hereafter died and with respect to my estate I so authorize it to be divided or disposed as follows that is to say I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my beloved wife twenty pounds in cash and to each of my children with her begotten ten pounds cash and ten pounds worth of books of divinity so as my executor may think most useful and with regard to the remainder of my estate I so allow it to be managed ordered and divided as my wife Elizabeth Craig James Craig and Wm. Craig whom I so appoint executrix and executors may think most prudent and such division conduct or management by them made shall be finest as though it had been done by myself and further it is my desire that a decent provision be made for my wife and not less than a child’s part of my estate be given to her and the remainder divided among my children as my executrix and executors may deem most prudent and further incase any of my executors should die or absent themselves before my turn over my estate is settled or divided I so allow the remaining two to choose another executor whom I invest with the same power and care as though such executor had been chosen by myself and further incase any dispute should arise among my executors respecting the division or management of my estate any two of them agreeing shall determine such dispute but the shall have power to divide my estate amongst my wife and children only given under my hand this fifth day of February one thousand seven hundred and ninety five. And in case the executors appointed by me should all die or any may be disabled to choose other executors as above I so allow and request the court of the county wherever I live at my death to choose executors for the management and division of my estate and such executors by them chosen I so invest with the same power that I have allowed to them chosen by myself. Peggy Evans Mary Craig George Craig Codicil I have this day reconsidered the last will and testament written on the opposite half sheet and do approve there of with the following additions Viz - I appoint James Craig Jun. son of William Craig Exec" in room of my wife Elizabeth decd'. Item I give and bequeath my right and title of a negro girl named Pegg to my sister Sarah Thorp in lieu of an annuity bequeathed to her by my father if she (Sarah Thorp) chooses to accept of her as an equivalent with the consent of my executors - Item I wish that my executors contribute my estate towards the support of my sister in law Peggy Evans so long as she remains single and is attentive to my children - also that they consider my sister in low Polly Evans and allow her some support, or such present as they shall think proper. Signed sealed and acknowledged this my last will and testament this 16th Nov 1801 In presence of Wm. Wilson John Poage George Craig [Seal] At a court held for Augusta County the 28th day of December 1801 This last will and testament of George Craig deceased was proved by the oath of Peggy Evans witness thereto, and also proved to be all together in the handwriting of the said Craig; and also of codicil annexed to the said will was proved by the oaths of William Wilson and John Poage the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of James Craig and William Craig two of the executors therein named who made oath according to law and together with James Rankin William Crawford Samuel Lefsley and Joshua Evans ordered into and acknowledged their bond in the penal of twenty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted them for having a probate there of due form, and leave is reserved for the other executor to join in the probate when he shall think of it. This deed of gift from George Craig to Peggy Evans was proved by the oaths of John Poage and William Craig two of the witnesses and ordered to be recorded.
