I Sam’l Long of the South River in the County of Augusta & State of Virginia being weak in body but of a sound & perfect mind & memory, blessed be god do this fifth day of December one thousand eight hundred & five make & publish this my last Will & testament in manner following, & first and principally, Recommending my soul unto god that gave it, recommending my body to be buried by my executors in a Christian like & decent manner & as touching such worldly Estate wherever it hath Pleased god to bless me in this life. I give devise & bequeath the same as followeth, to wit. Impremis it is my will & desire & I hereby order & direct that all my Just debts & funeral Charges be first paid & satisfied. Item, I give & bequeath to my brother James my right & claims of the negro boy named Jesse that he took with him when he went to Kentucky, also what Land belonged to me in Kentucky, it being the half of fourteen Hundred acres which was Located & surveyed for him & me, but I believe was never divided, also my young soral mare, & a few dollars that he Rec’d of me the last time he was in this Country, to him his heirs or assigns for ever. Item, I give & bequeath to my brother Francis Long my right & Clame of the Negro Girl named Reachal & Issue which went to Kentucky with my mother, the right or Clame is a bill of seail I Rec’d of Mr. Waddle whom I bought her mother & Ishue to him, his heirs & assign for ever. Item, I give & bequeath to my brother David what money & grain he rec’d at different times from me for different uses to him his heirs & assigns for ever. Item, I Give & bequeath to my Brother Joseph what money he Rec’d from me at Different times to him his heirs & assigns forever. Item, I give & bequeath as much money in property as will purchase one good sute of Clothes for Brother Alexander. Item, I give & bequeath to my Broather David’s daughter Elizabeth a Negro girl named Else, also one horse or mare, which she Chooses out of my stock & two Cows to her & her heirs & assigns forever. Item, I give & bequeath to my Broather David’s son Sam’l my land on the south River which I live on, & the half of the Negroes that is not wiled & the half of the horses that is not wiled, the half of the Cattle & all the money Excepting what shall be hereafter mentioned to him his heirs & assigns for ever. Item, I Give & bequeath to William Long, David’s Son the other half of the Negroes & horses & Cattle to him his heirs & assigns for ever. Item, It is my will & do order that in case any of the above mentioned Sam’l or Wm Long die without Legal ishue the part wiled to them goes unto the other & if Both die without Legal ishue then it is to be divided amongst David’s heirs. Item, I do order & direct that there shall be five pounds Levied out of my estate for the purpose of building the grave yard & securing a small quantity Land for that purpose, if Alexander Long, and Francis cheuses to keep house, I do order & direct that they shall have part of stock of horses & Cattle for the use of Milk, & horses for working the land & a half of the Negroes to work as long as they keep house. I hereby Constitute & appoint Joseph Bell, Wm Long & Sam’l Long Executors of this my last will & testament hoping that they will see the same punctually fulfiled Ratifying & confirming it and no other to be my last will & Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day and year first within written. Signed Sealed & Published Sam’l Long {Seal} Pronounced & Declared by The Testator Sam’l Long as & for his last will & Testament in the presents of us the Subscribers Joseph Bell Sarah Bell her x mark Copy Teste, Vincent Tapp, D.C. ac At a court held for Augusta County Jan’y 24th 1814 This last Will and Testament of Samuel Long deceased was proved by the the oaths of Joseph Bell and Sarah Bell the Witness thereto and ordered to be recorded & Joseph Bell one of the executors named in said Will in open Court refused to qualify as such) whereupon on the motion of {p. 311} William Long, another executor named in said Will who took oath prescribed by law & together with Robert Stuart & James B___ his securities entered into & acknowledged their Bonds in the penalty of sixteen thousand dollars conditioned as the Law directs, certificate of probat is granted him thereon in due form. See additional order at Page 322 Teste Erasmus Stibling, C.C. p. 322 And at a Court held for the aforesaid County of Augusta, February the 28th 1814. This Last Will & testament of Samuel Long deceased was again presented in Court & Samuel Long another Executor named in the said will appeared in Court & made oath thereto according to law & together with James Best & Samuel Blackwood his securities entered into & acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of sixteen thousand Dollars conditioned as the Law requires. Teste Erasmus Stribling CC Augusta Co., Va., WB 12, p.11 Inventory of Samuel Long [The following inventory and sale of the personal property of Sam’l Long from the Chancery Court Files] Inventory 3 Feb 1814 pursuant to order of Court held 24th Jan’y 1814 Total value of inventory was $2351.56 ¾ [A list of personal estate and Negroes was given, as was a list of bonds, part of which follows] A bond of twenty five pounds executed to James Long by Alex’r due first Oct’r 1798 & credited £5-9-5 A bond of £25 executed to James Long by Alex’r Long payable 1st Oct 1799 assigned to Sam’l Long by sd James Long A bond of £25 executed to James Long by Alex’r Long & payable 1st Oct 1800 assigned to Sam’l Long by sd James Long The total of the money, notes and bonds was $137 pounds, nine shillings, & eleven pence Half penny Total of personal property and slaves was $3006.68. [The following is a summary of the sale of inventory of Samuel Long from the Chancery Court Files] Memorandum of the property of Samuel Long dec’d Sold at auction this 14th February 1814.
