William Long's will (of South River, Shanadore)-- To wife; to son, Alexander Long, the money that son William had in possession at his decease; to son, William's son, infant; to son, Francis, 100 acres adjoining Jacob Gabhart; to sons, David and Joseph, 400 acres that David lives on; to son, John, if ever he returns home again; to son, James, part of testator's home tract adjoining James Bell; to son, Samuel, other part of tract lying between Francis and James; to daughters, Elizabeth Henderson and Dorcas Barnet, 150 acres on Long Meadow; to grandson, William Long, son of son William, 250 acres on Long Meadow adjoining Andrew McClure and James Alexander. Executors, sons Alexander, Samuel, James. Teste: John Bell, Gabriel Alexander, Joseph Bell. Proved, 18th September, 1781, by John Bell and Alexander. Transcript In the Name of God amen. I William Long of the South River of Shanadore in the County of Augusta and Common Wealth of Virginia being weake of body but of a perfect mine and memory blessed be god do this 29th day of January 1781 make & publish this my last will and Testament in manner following and first and principally recommending my Soul unto the hands of God that gave it. I recommend my Body to be Buried by my Executors in a Christian like and decent manner nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty power of God and as Touching such Worldly Estate wherever it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and devise and bequeath the same as followeth, Viz Impremis it is my will and desire and I hereby order and direct that all my just Debts and funeral charges be first paid & satisfied. Item I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife her wearing apparel, bed and bed clothes, also all the cows and & sheep and Rachel the negro girl and all the household furniture excepting what shall be hereafter mentioned to dispose of as she thinks fit, also her thirds of all the Land I have in possession, also the house during her natural life. Item I will and bequeath to my Son Alexander Long, the one half of the Mills and Ten acres of land lying on the hill joining the Mills for the use of firewood and the one half of the stills, also all the money bonds and book accounts that my son William had in his possession at his desese to him and his heirs & assigns forever out of this he is to furnish my grandson William son when he comes to the age of twenty one years one good horse and saddle and clothing, one suit such as his father left. Item I give and bequeath to my son Francis Long one hundred acres of land lying along Jacob Gabhart’s line to him and his heirs and assigns forever, also twenty pounds in hard money or the value in paper for his work at the Mills, to be paid him as shall hereafter directed. Item I give and bequeath to my sons David & Joseph Long four hundred acres of Land that David now lives, to be divided equally between them in quantity and quality to them and their heirs or assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my son John Long, if ever he returns home again one hundred pounds of hard money or the value in paper to be levied out of my estate as his proper share of land to him and his heirs or assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my sons James Long the one half of the land which remains not heretofore bequeathed part of the tract I now live on lying along James Bells line, also the one half of the mills and the half of the still and the Negro boy named Jesse to him and his heirs and assigns for ever, also one Young bay mare. Item I give and bequeath my son Samuel Long the other half of the remainder of land before mentioned lying betwixt Francis & James. Also the Negro woman named Jenny and her child named Jeremia to him & his heirs or assigns for ever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughters Elizabeth Henderson & Dorcas Barnet one hundred and thirty five acres of land joining David’s & Josephs, also one hundred and fifty acres of Land lying on the Long Meadow to be equally divided betwixt them to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Also one bed and bed clothes to each of them. Item I give and bequeath to my grand son William Long William’s son two hundred and fifty acres of Land lying on the Long Meadow Either side joining Andrew McClure on the fields joining Jas. Alexander to him and his heirs for ever. Item it is my will and do order that in case that my grandson dies before he arrives at the age of twenty one years or comes to the possession of his estate herein bequeathed that then that part of my estate shall (be sold &) equally divided between my sons Alexander, Francis, Joseph and David, Samuel and James. It is my will and order and direct that my sons Alexander and James Long do pay the above mentioned twenty pounds to my son Francis out of their proper share within two years after my desease. Item it is my will and do order that the waggon and horses not heretofore mentioned and farming utensils it is to be for the use of the Plantation Equally amongst my sons, Alexander, Francis, Sam’l and James Long. Item it is my will that in case any of my children be dissatisfied & raise disturbance in the family about their part that they shall have five shillings as their share & their part be equally divided amongst the rest of my children. I hereby constitute and appoint my sons Alexander, Samuel and James Long to Executors of this my last will and Testament hoping that they will see the same punctually fulfilled ratifying it and no other to be my last will & testament. In witness whereunto I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & year first written. Signed sealed Published William Long {Seal} Pronounced and declared by the Testator Wm Long as & for His last will & testament in the presents of us the subscribers John Bell Gabriel Alexander Jas Bell At a court held for Augusta County Sept 18th 1781 This last will and Testament of William Long, dec’d was proved by the oath of John Bell & Gabriel Alexander two of the Witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded Test At a Court held for the said County the 20th day of Decem’r 1797 On the motion of Alexander Long one of the Executors named in this last Will & Testament of William Long dec’d who made oath according to Law; and together with Joseph Bell Jr & Alexander Thompson his securities entered into & acknowledged their bond in the penalty of four thousand Dollars conditioned as law directs. Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form; and leave is granted Samuel & James Long the Exc’r there in named in the sd Will to join in the Probate when they may think fit.
