Will of JOHN BRIGHT, 1827 Augusta County, Virginia Contributor: Wayne Coffey -------------------------------------------------- I John Bright of Augusta County and State of Virginia do hereby make and constitute this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say after all my just debts are paid I leave unto Susannah my wife if she should survive me a sufficient maintenance with possession of the dwelling house in which we now live the land to be occupied by my son Peter during her natural life that is the land on which I now live from the proceeds of which she is to be supported in a proper decent manner after her death I give and bequeath unto my son Peter Bright and his heirs forever the plantation on which I live at the rate and price of one thousand dollars. Five hundred of which I give him in the land and five hundred he is to pay in manner following. Three hundred dollars in two years after the death of his mother and two hundred dollars in one year from the payment of the three hundred to be equally divided among the rest of the named children that is John, Jacob, Margaret, David, Samuel, Henry. Susannah, Jacob and David having received money of me in their share is to account with my Executors when the dividend is made. I give and bequeath unto Adam Bright and Stephen Bright the land known by the name of the sawmill tract to be divided according to the line I have made each one to keep where he is now in possession of in manner following Adam Bright is to pay one hundred and eighty dollars. I also order Stephen to pay one hundred dollars which sums is to be equally divided among the above named children. I order the land in pines known by the name of Mill tract to be sold and the money equally divided among the above named. As concerning my personal estate I order first my son Peter Bright to have two horses of his choice, my wagon and one plow. The remaining property to be sold at the common credit and I order my Executors to give unto George Bright or his heirs five dollars out of the money viewing that sum to be as much as he merits of my estate. And lastly I constitute and appoint my two sons Henry Bright and Peter Bright my Executors of this my last will and testament revoking and disannulling all other wills by me heretofore made in testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of April eighteen hundred and twenty seven. This last will and testament of John Bright decd was presented in court and ordered the oaths of William McCormick and Luke Collins two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Henry Bright the Executor therein named who made oath thereto and together with William Steele, Peter Bright and Stephen Bright his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $3000 conditioned as the law directs which bond is ordered to be recorded. Certificate is granted him for obtaining probate thereof in due form. Peter Bright the other Executor therein named appeared in Court and refused to take upon himself the Busthen of the execution thereof.
