Will of James Lessley: Recorded in the Augusta County Clerks Office, 
Staunton, VA in Will Book 6, Page 146. A Copy Teste: Frances W. Sutton,

In the name of God Amen. I being weak in body but of a sound mind & 
judgment and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die and knowing 
that my departure out of this world draweth nigh I think it my duty to 
set my house in order or dispose of what little worldly estate God hath 
blessed me with in the following manner---But first I commend my Soul to 
God who gave it and my Body to the dust to be buried in a decent manner 
at the descretion of my Executors at the expence my own estate as 
follows Imprimis I bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Sarah what law 
directs and besides or above her horse and saddle bed and Bed clothes 
and allow her managment of the plantation during her Widdowhool and 
three horses and a mare and five cows for the support of the children 
under her care & these horses and cows at last to be devided among the 
children at the widdows discretion. I bequeath to my son James one 
Dollour having already given him his portion or part of my estate I 
bequeath to my son John Seventy five pounds and a dollar in cash. I 
bequeath to my sons Robert and Samuel the plantation I now live upon to 
be equally devided betwixt them and if any one of them die before he 
come of age the whole plantation comes to the one that lives as also 
their equal part of my movable estate and ten ponds in cash for their 
education I bequeath to my maried daughter, Mary Robertson & Margret 
Roger to each to them one pound I bequeath to my daughters now with me 
(Viz) Isabella, Dolly, Sarah, Agnes & Elisabeth an equal part of my 
movable estate and ten pounds cash to each of the five here named. Not 
cash is here mentioned as different from the movable estate and this I 
constitute ordain approve of appoint and declare to be my

last will and testament in opposition to all or any other will or wills 
made by me at any time prior to the date herof and I hereby constitute 
and appoint my trusty and well beloved wife Sarah & my son James & 
William Johnston the Executors of this my last will and testament. In 
witness of all these premises here above written I hereunto subscribe my 
name and annex my seal this 5th day ofg March Annoqz Dominii 1767

At a Court continued and held for Augusta County August 19th 1780 the 
last will and testament of James Lessley deceased was produced into 
Court and the subscribing witnesses to (wit) John Stewart and William 
Stewart, being dead and the Court went into Examination of sundry 
witnesses to prove the hand writing of thr said witnesses and the Court 
being satisfied with the evidences and likewise of the similutude of 
hand by the papers produced in Court signed by the said witnesses it is 
ordered that the same be admited to record wherupon Sarah the Widdow and 
Executrix therin named came into Court and on her motion she having made 
oath according to law Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probat 
therof in due form she having with Securitys entered into and 
acknowledged their Bond also according to Law
