Settlement, James Mayse, 1869
Augusta County Will Book 43, Page 25

 The foregoing statement made after the usual notice showing a balance of $148.74 as due to the 
administratix for money received and satisfactory vouchers for disbursement.  James Mayse died intestate, 
leaving little personal estate but considerable real estate ~ his personal estate was soon exhausted in 
payment of debts.  He left his widow (Mrs. R. H. Mayse) and one child ~ the widow administered the estate 
and became guardian of the child ~ dower has been assigned to the widow, giving her the tan yard property 
and home residence, the property falling to the child has been rented out by the mother and proceeds 
applied to payment of debts, and your commissioner has continued her accounts as administratix, perhaps 
not strictly according to law, yet ~ the result is the same pretty much ~ as the property falling to the child 
would be and is first liable to the payment of debts.  At the end of another year, the widow hopes to be able 
to pay off all the debts, then an account may be opened as guardian of her child.  She deserves great credit 
for her good management of the estate ~ in freeing it from debt and will in the end realize a handsome 
estate for her child.
